I have an extra spare hard drive from a friends computer. Its 250gb if I recall. I have been wanting an external hard drive since my computer doesnt have alot of HD space. Do they make hd enclosure that fit laptop hard drives for cheep because I would like to mod it into a book to fit nicely on my desk?

If it is SATA, I grabbed one of these (http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0279257) a while back at Microcenter for like 12$. Enermax Jazz. Nice little enclosure. It's aluminum and feels sturdy. The drive uses little clips on the inside to actually be held in, which seems to work well.

It includes a usb data cable and a power to usb cable for stubborn drives that need a little bit more power and/or for usb plugs that don't provide as much power. On one of my rigs the up front usb ports needs both plugged in to get the drive enough power, but the ports on the back just need the one. It's nice that they include the extra cable to get enough power if it is needed. Comes with a little soft baggie for it as well.

I'm sure there are plenty of good ones as well. I just happened to have a good experience with that one, and it was cheap when I bought it.
