Too bad musicians today aren't what they used to be. Just sayin, the world would be a much different place me thinks.

The group I'm singing with now is doing a tribute to Buddy Rich with a vocalese version of Basically Blues called Basically Buddy.

I think there are musicians just as or more talented than we've had in the past. The problems come from the fact that there are a lot more genres of music today, so much of the talent could be in a genre you don't listen to. Also, jazz isn't the popular genre of music anymore, so with less money there are less people in it and you don't hear about them as easily. For instance,

Unbelievable precision

Saw this guy last year,

And this guy last night,

Several times over the years,

And I've Diana Krall a few times . . .

Can't forget Jane Monheit. Her arrangement of Over the Rainbow was stolen by that American Idol winner in season five, no joke, and Jane does it better. I've seen Jane Monheit countless times now.

Alright well, I'm getting carried away, but there are plenty more contemporary artists both vocal and instrumental.

I agree with you D, all I was trying to say is that all the musicians so far listed in this thread have more talent in their pinkies, than the ones that get grammy nominations. I realize times have changed, but it's a shame that Jazz doesn't get the credit it deserves for where music is now.

Agreed. Plenty of talent, but they tend to not be in the most popular genres because...well, let's face it, most of the most popular genres of the last 10-15 years don't really require that much talent to succeed in... :whistler:

The vast majority of the music I listen to was either written before I was born or is by groups that most people in the US have never heard of. :P

Now you must list some of them.

Now you must list some of them.

Hahaha, well, let's see..
Nightwish
Within Temptation
Jorn Lande
Savatage
Masterplan
Enya
Loreena McKennitt
Rogue Traders
Muse
Kemopetrol
Porno Graffitti
L'Arc-en-Ciel
Cool Joke
Nana Kitade
Crystal Kay
Edison
Mell
The Pillows
Monoral

..ok, maybe not 'most' of the people in the US, but probably a majority. :P
..and I'll admit I had to look up the last 9..anime OSTs.. :whistler:

On less obscure stuff, I enjoy My Chemical Romance, Gorilllaz, Hootie and the Blowfish, Coldplay, Clannad, Flogging Molly, Sarah Brightman, and Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

,,,and for stuff written before I was born..
Most of the 60's-80's-era "classic" rock; AC/DC, Bon Jovi, The Rolling Stones, and the like. Though I also quite enjoy a well-performed piece from the original 'classic' period (Bach, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, etc).

I do occasionally enjoy a good 90's-era rap piece, but only if I'm in the mood...which isn't very often...

..and yes, before anyone runs to google to see confirm a suspicion, those lists do include everything from classical instrumental to J-pop to classic rock to new age to symphonic metal to Irish folk to traditional Hawaiian. :P I have rather diverse tastes. :P

Good list 88,

But I would like to point out that without the era me and D are talking about, a lot of those bands wouldn't exist today. We would still be cheering on Mozart type orchestra's. No that it wouldn't be fun, but music would be nowhere today without the pioneers of the 20's,30's, and 40's. Just sayin.

Oh, I completely agree. They're just not my personal favorites.
