I like HP/Compaq laptops, but the Toshiba Satelite range is consitantly good build quality.

I reason i liked the HP/Compaq is because they were amongst the first to take the step into dedicated laptop graphics...which ATI then promptly dropped all support for, instead producing a range of knocked-down desktop chips instead. Ah, the ATI Mobility Radeon. It could play Morrowind, actually. Not bad really.

Actualy, I heard from a pc service guy that toshiba currently have the worst record for reliability. He said that their que for returning or repairing broken items is so big that it takes over three weeks for them to even look at it. He said that they have over twice the normal faliure rate for laptops, and it's sending them down the drain financialy. That's why there are deals on toshiba laptops everywhere. I have 25% off any toshiba laptop through my student card, but after talking to the people who service laptops, I would never buy one.

The best advice I can give you is to go with ASUS. The company make some of the best motherboards on the market and the asus laptop that I bought showed that their laptops have the same level of quality.

Where do you live?
If you live in the UK check out www.overclockers.co.uk I got a 1.8ghz turion64, dedicated 256mb 7300GO, and 1gb ram for 860 I think. But they have some AWESOME deals on lower-end laptops.
Check them out.

I've actually heard and seen very good things about Toshiba laptops, far better than HP. As much as I hate to say it, Dell actually makes pretty good ones, too. I've not seen many ASUS laptops, but their motherboards are usually top quality and if that worksmanship does transfer over to the rest of their product line then I'm sure it would make a fine choice as well.

As far as I know toshiba have been pretty good up until recently, I'm just passing on advice that I have been given. Although, I read a few articles last month about toshiba's past, and e-opinions turns up some disheartening stories.

Oh, I'm not arguing, just stating my opinion and experience. For all I know, Toshibas could be pure crap and the few Ive seen and the few people I know who have used them were just very lucky. *shrug*

I've never owned a Toshiba but the magasines i read give them good reviews. Never heard anything bad about them before now, and they have pretty good screens, unlike my HP/Compaq.

Yeah, i've gotten "lucky" in tech, too. DFI Mobos are apparently very picky. Mine's stable as hell, even overclocked. iPods are apparently very, very, very bitchy. I've washed mine, dropped it, ran over it on my bike, and smacked it agianst my head, and it's fine.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio F20, 6600 Nvidia Go graphics, 50 GB HDD, 2 TV Tuners, great HD screen, survived a LAN party, CoD2 rocks when you play on it, great speakers.

I haven't seen any laptops other than this one that are made for entertainment, but I would suggest the G20, the bigger brother.
