Hey fellas,
I'm familiar with all the things people do to mod their case, yet I've never done much to my own. I'm looking to build myself a new computer, so while I'm waiting to save up the funds, I figured I might as well have a sweet case to put my new beast in. However, I'm new to modding.
How can I get experience/skilled at modding so I can have a great case when I only get a new computer every couple years? Should I just buy a case to do some practice/tinkering on?
I have a great idea that I'd really love to do for a case, but I'm afraid it's going to take some skills that I haven't had practice with yet. Should I set my sights on a fairly simple design instead? Or maybe just anticipate my case not looknig nearly as cool as I originally envisioned?

Any help and direction you can give me would be great!

EDIT: Thanks for the advice, I'll have to round up an old case somewhere to start tinkering around. I already posted my case concept in the Ideas forum, i don't think I'll have a problem with aiming high :)

Go to the local computer surplus/trash store, and pick up an old case that will fit all standard ATX equipment. Keep a good case (pre-mod or not) at your house in case you f-up. Mod the old case. If you don't like it, try to sell it/part it. If you do like it, use it.

=D

That's kind of what I am doing with ArgDawn

I'd pickup a cheapy case and start modding it!, Layout the really hard part of your design and try it on the cheap one. You'll get it looking good with a little practice. Then move to the real case (or try another practice case, depends on weather you like what you had or not!) and go whole hog, Allways try to make it better then you thing you can do....That way you have to reach for it, you'll gain skill and when it's done you'll have something your proud of!!!!

Sounds like great advice guys. I can't wait to get started. Thank god for graduating college and getting my career going, I'm gonna need a small investment into some useful tools to get a good start.

Anyone wanna sell me their cheap plain case? lol

Anyone wanna sell me their cheap plain case? lol

I would, but after quite a bit of labor and about 50$, it's no longer cheap or plain. ;)

Having a "practice" case is a great idea. I too am also new to the modding scene. And having a cheapo case to practice a few things on and even possibly end up making into a pretty neato case to get some money out of is a good idea instead of taking a expensive case and accidently ruining it because you didnt quite know what you were doing. lol Look through out the project logs here on this website. They can give you some great idea's on what to do to your case and even some what teach you how to do it. Happy modding!
