For those of you who love all things space related...here is a killer site (http://www.spacewallpapers.net/index.html)for outer space wallpaper. Enjoy!

Click on "Top Rated" on the left

EDIT Also...here (http://www.apophysis.org/) is a great little piece of freeware for crreating your own fractals. It takes a little bit of playing with, but the learning curve isn't that steep. Hell, if I can figure it out, anyone can :)

I've always wanted to play with Apoph, but I didn't know it was free. Cool!

EDIT:

Anywho, here's what will be my next wallpaper (after I finish it, then scan it, then work on it in photoshop):

Download VLC Media Player. Under the "Video" menu, there's a "Wallpaper" option. It won't repeat unless you tell it to, but it's freakin' awesome anyways.

I don't actually have 3 screens. Just two, and a normal video card. I actually photoshopped that because I know a guy who's already jealous of my 2560*1024 resolution. He already knows it's a joke, too.

But still, I might end up doing that after I get enough money. =D

Yeah, Gnome is Windows-esqe, but I've yet to find a good looking KDE theme. I remember only seeing one good KDE screen, and it was somewhere on the Gentoo forums (not that yours is bad, but I just don't like KDE). Perhaps it's just me being biased, and it actually probably is, but my experiences with KDE haven't been well. The main thing that annoys the hell out of me for some reason is the way the minimized windows are displayed in the brick-like patter. I like having a single row of bars, not two.

I finally got my compy back working, so I'm going to make a new screen and post it later. I've been missing PS oh so much (you too Gimp, you too ;)).

long story short:
Linux = DEAD, fubar'ed and didn't like wirlesws, so XP here i go,

Now after installing XP, i thought it looks too much like everyone else's, too common,

So let the modding commence:

the desktop:
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/5953/desktopfc9.th.png (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=desktopfc9.png)
Notice the start button, This is done via a small Explorer mod, check cig for details.

next is my computer, i thought the stanadard icons are a bit common also, so i downloaded some free icons, and startted modding, this is done with a reg mod, will do a tut soon for this.

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/9177/compah8.th.png (http://img514.imageshack.us/my.php?image=compah8.png)

next was what you get when you save or open a document or file, notice the left where my computer, my docs is.

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/9853/diloguecr4.th.png (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=diloguecr4.png)

Then was the the RUN dilog, this was too bland also, so here is a small shell mod.

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/5607/runbz9.th.png (http://img514.imageshack.us/my.php?image=runbz9.png)

Last but not least is the bar when you use classic tiles, ie not fast user switching and use classic logon.

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/592/shutdownot6.th.png (http://img514.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shutdownot6.png)

all of the above will be put into a tut soon.

Yeah, it's very nice, I haven't had too many problems so far, but the only thing I don't like is the lack of a GUI package manager/installer. Like Synaptic on Ubuntu. That made it very easy to install all sorts of apps, and I wish Fedora had something like that.

"Silent Spring", a local band comprised of a few of my friends and in need of a vocalist currently. Named after the book that talked about DDT useage or something like that.

Approximation of Decimation is the name of the album they're going to be releasing (locally) next year. The vocals are all about a postapoctalyptic earth, but in different situations. For instance, "Midnight" is about a nuclear wasteland of a world, in refrence to the Doomsday clock. "No World Order" is about a worldwide anarchist revolution and the ramifications of that (Part of the lyrics: "Mongrels fill the streets, plaguing the earth with rape, murder and theivery, while the good-hearted merely seek refuge from the destruction and chaos that fills their once peaceful world")

Back in the day, I was a big fan of modding my desktop, windows skin, icons, winamp skin etc etc. Here's how it looked before I reformatted:
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/3642/screeniedy0.th.jpg (http://img521.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screeniedy0.jpg)

And after reformat:
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/6899/screenie2az6.th.jpg (http://img337.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenie2az6.jpg)

It's XP, but I like the look of vista, so I had to use a vista-wannabe skin. I didn't want to use custom icons again because it'd just end up cluttering up my PC with junky programs, even though they look pretty.

new, Rage Against the Machine wp

http://www.lotechdesigns.com/host/thumbs/8618rageezlnwp.jpg (http://www.lotechdesigns.com/host/images/8618rageezlnwp.jpg)

EDIT:

some explanations...

The red star on a black background is the official flag of the EZLN, which is a rebel group based in Chipas, Mexico. They're against globalization and imperialism. The EZLN on the star was put there by me, obviously.

The red bars have no meaning, really. Just for looks.

"Rage Against The Machine" is the name of a band (obviously, you should know this already) and they support the EZLN. So I felt it was appropriate.

And soon got bored of it, and made myself a wallpaper with a bunch of photos of me and my friends, because I like to feel popular =P (I've saved it at a terribly low quality and a small size to protect the identities of the people in it, this is just to show the general gist of the coolness of my wallpaper) :

Here's the tutorial (http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/starfield-tutorial.html) that I followed.

It's a bit confusing; I'm thinking it was written for a previous release of GIMP. If you're running the most recent version, use 'Feather' instead of 'Fade' in the Select dropdown menu. And if you decide to add supernovas, be sure to do it on a transparent layer instead of using the black layer (according to the tutorial).

And this one is on my server (put it up on my XP system for ease of capturing a SS):

It definitely is. When you move a window, it blobs around like jelly, and with Gnome you can customize to your hearts desire. Hell, you can even make it look like Vista if you want!

xRyokenx
06-17-2008, 04:31 PM
There isn't any way to configure Ubuntu to run Windows programs though, is there? I use my PC for gaming quite a bit otherwise I'd be using something else besides Vista.

I think its called wine. I've seen videos of people playing WoW and COD4(and others) on Linux using wine.

.Maleficus.
06-17-2008, 05:50 PM
Wine is correct. It doesn't do all Windows programs, but for what you're getting with a free download for a free OS, you can't really beat it.

Unless you use the paid-for version called Cedega, which is strictly games but costs $5 a month. Much more compatibility, but you pay for it.

xRyokenx
06-17-2008, 06:18 PM
Five bucks a month for a subscription? Nah... if it were you pay $20 or so and you're done paying I'd go with it but I'm not one for subscriptions, lol. Reason #2 why I haven't bought AoC. I'll give it a try one day.

Maybe backup your most important stuff but honestly, you should be fine. If you do mess up something, it's really easy to fix. I recently had a problem with my /boot partition not being big enough so I couldn't do updates, so I deleted my swap and boot, repartitoned, couldn't boot Ubuntu or Windows and with a simple "reinstallation" (I just went through the installer to recreate GRUB) it was fixed. Piece of cake.

XcOM
06-20-2008, 03:51 PM
wubi is a piece of cake, mainly becuase it dosen't partitoion yor system

its creates a virtual drive using a .DISK file, which is a set size you define during setup, warning though, peformance isn't as fast as a real setup, also your settings don't really save untill you shutdown! also you can't hibernate

It really isn't bad though. I was using wubi for a while and i thought the performance was fine. I'm sure a beefier computer would make the performance hit even less noticeable.
