I was running Serious Sam 2 yesterday, and it requires the DVD to be in, so of course it was in. it worked like it has for the 2 weeks or so that ive had it.

today i was messing with my FSB, getting that extra few mhz (1000 or so ^_^ ) and i put in my aqua teen DVD today and it did nothing. i tried every DVD i had on hand and it did the same nothing it did before. i unplugged it, replugged it, rinse repeat for like 20 minutes, then i gave up, left it unplugged, and it oddly a DVD rom icon shows up in Vista still.

i dont think its vista, its gotta be the DVD rom. it wont show up in the bios on my ASUS P5LD2 no matter what SATA plug i use, i even changed up the cable and power connector. could i have killed my SATA on the MB by overclocking the FSB?

im gonan try my PCI SATA controller later on, once i find the drivers for vista, if they exist. im hoping my new $45 drive isnt toast.

Lite-on is a great company, however alot of their produects have been known to die. I'd go with HP, they make pretty good drives, I have a CD Player from liek 1992 or somthing.

If you have a spare SATA device, or can swap say a non-OS HDD from your machine, its a good way to hardware test the SATA chip.

Try using the Vista Reliability Monitor. It might help or maybe give some tiny clues to help you solve the problem. Maybe try putting the FSB down to stock speeds.

Also, if you overclocked you might have pushed it too far and the CMOS reset itself. Check to see if SATA is enabled in the bios--by default most BIOS' disable this feature.

Yo you guys remember when like only the government had access to cd drives and there where like bigger then the computers itself? Man those where da days...

Try locking your PCI/AGP/PCIe bus speeds. As I said in another thread, all the computer components works under a bus, whether it's external (PCI card) or internal (onboard, like the sata controller), and if it's running under a ratio, there are chances your bus runs too fast for the controller.

SO if i cranked up my bus too high the SATA onboard may not work, eh? I dunno what my PCIe bus is supposed to be(that bit of info would be helpful ;) ), but I have the option to set my PCI bus at ~33mhz like it should be, i believe. So when I have time ill have to install that PCI SATA controller that has been collecting dust for over a year(i think i used it for like 2 months and then replaced my MB, lol)

PCI-E should be set a 100MHz. AGP at 66MHz, and PCI at 33MHz. If these are running at that speed, then the bus is not the problem. >_<

i tried locking my PCI-E bus at 100mhz and it wouldn't post, wth?

on another note, my PCI bus is locked at 33mhz and i have a SATA card plugged into it and the dvd rom works fine, other than not properly playing video, though that may be a software issue
