Project Drei sechzig is now underway. I'm taking my Xbox 360 Elite and modding it. I ordered some parts last night for it, to optimize the air performance of it.

http://www.xbox-accessories.com/xcm-360-high-speed-air-cooler-p-13.html
http://www.xbox-accessories.com/xcm-high-speed-air-cooler-addon-fan-p-29.html
http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=73_89&products_id=741

I ordered the XCM High Speed Air Cooler, and the add-on fan for that kit. I also grabbed a Tailsmoon Clear Fan Duct. I have plans on swapping my Hitachi drive for a Samsung, and buying a clear DVD cover for it like this one. (http://www.consoleshop.com/product.php?productid=16268&cat=260&page=1) After that, I have a plexi window in mind; custom, along with blue ghost flames. I gotta practice doing ghost flames first though.

Sounds pretty cool i look forward to seeing this. I WISH i had the balls to mod my 360. I'm just so afraid that as soon as i mod it its going to die and I'm going to be stuck with a dead 360 and a voided warranty.

All it takes is a strong ingenuity and patience. Or maybe I talk too lightly about modding a $500+ xbox. lol but I'm sure every modder that's built anything here can do what I'm gonna do.

n fact, I'm getting the clear fan shroud replaced with another clear one that has blue LEDs already in it, for just $5 more. Unfortunately, Llamma.com shipped it out early this morning, before they got my e-mail to cancel the order. Atleast they'll let me ship it back without the restocking fee.

I'm sure i could handle it. Its not that I'm afraid of breaking it in the process, for me its just the bad reputation the Xbox has for failing on its own that keeps me from modding it. I feel like i might need that warranty a couple months down the road. *knock on wood*

That's what its all about. Why wait 3 years when everyone else has already done it? Be a pioneer; a leader.

I had the idea of the 360 logo over the dvd drive for a while now. I just dont know if I should do it, because henmill already did it; I dont want it to seem like a design ripoff. So the DVD cut-out idea is still up in the air. I am open for suggestions though.

Personally, I say if you like the X logo over the dvd drive, i say go for it. I wouldn't let the fact that its been done hold you back.

Works, but...

So being discouraged yesterday, I threw all the stock **** back into it and tested it with just the pusher fan to see if there were any improvements.

The 360 Elite's don't use as much power for the processor than the 360. The 360 freezes after an hour of play laying on its side. The 360 Elite starts to lag and jump frames after an hour, but doesn't freeze. After installation of just the pusher fan, I found that it didn't offer much of an improvement gaming-wise. It still glitched and skipped frames after an hour of play.

Now to hop back into it:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1498.jpg
I fixed the fan; loose wire.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1499.jpg
But I hear grinding noises now,
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1500.jpg
even with the case assembled. The GPU fan is grinding something.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1501.jpg
I have no choice but to make it fit without fault.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1502.jpg
The video output block is taller than a 360's, because of the addition of HDMI. This kit wasn't designed for the 360 Elite.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1503.jpg
I had to move the RF card; it sends the info wirelessly, instead of thru a USB.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1505.jpg
I soon found out that the board was too far away from the sensors of the receiver uniot to pick up the signals.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1508.jpg
So I moved it closer using the existing mounts from which it used to be screwed to.

It gives off a nice blue glow. I can't wait until I install the plexi window.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1513.jpg

So, the install of the fan kit; 1 to 10, it was a 4. Not too bad, but it wasn't exactly all snap-it-in. I needed a pair of dikes to cut the plastic. Also it was kinda like a puzzle; install the clear shroud, next is the DVD drive, then the pusher fan.

Elite: $515
Parts (so far): $120

Total cost (so far): $635

PS: And don't worry; that temp display will be painted Matte Black.

Well I had a change of heart with the direction I want to go with this project. I'm gonna just do a nice simple rounded rectangle plexi window. I'm also gonna drill into the plexi so my pusher fan can suck air from directly above, like luciusad's theory (even though it is not necessary). The Hitachi drive will still be swapped with a Samsung, and the Samsung and side covers/HDD will be painted with some color changing paint. Still debating about the ghost flames, since I have people that owe me money.

And lately I've been sick and tired of asking nicely and not getting any responses, online or in school. Basically, I loned over $200 because I'm so nice and not a dickhead; $40 of it was gas money!1

k no more ranting. Plans:

Rounded Rectangle Plexi Window
Fan Vent in Plexi
Custom Fan Cover
Color-Change Paint
Hitachi-Samsung Swap
Samsung DVD Cover

:D Sounds good. I'll also be doing the plexi soon, hopefully.

Edit: In fact, I also moved that sensor inside again. It was close enough before, but not close enough. Every time it lost the signal, the fan speed controller would shut off and then come back on in a few seconds. I relocated it two days ago and it stays on now.

This is another idea I came up with; I don't think anybody has done this yet. This is a shot of the panel that you can have the 360 stand up on. Drei sechzig will always be on its side, so what better to be the first, to my knowledge, to have a window on the side of a 360?
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1552.jpg
I trimmed the cage, too.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1553.jpg
Prepping the underside by getting rid of all of those tabs:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1554.jpg
Here you can see the lines.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1555.jpg
Pilot hole.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1556.jpg
Tried the finest bit I had with a jigsaw, doing a practice cut. I didn't like how rough it looked on the other side; either side.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1557.jpg
Also, the "o" in xbox pops out; I bet no one knew that, cause I didn't.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1558.jpg
So I instead drew my idea on the finished side, because pencil is pretty easy, suprisingly, to rub off of the case. Definitely a "do not try this at home to your own elite because your parents will kill you" shot. Luckily, my parents know that I know what I'm doing, otherwise it wouldn't of got new fans. :D

Llamma.com offers the service of doing the Blue Ring of Lights for $49; looks like I saved myself $49.

Ok, the work in progress shots:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1562.jpg
Start with a 15 watt soldering gun, 0603 SMD Blue LEDs, solder (I used .015 dia 1 oz solder), and some patience.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1563.jpg
Sorry I didn't go too in-depth about this part, didn't really need to. Rlatively a simple mod as long as you've soldered once before.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1564.jpg

Guess what you get? ANOTHER UPDATE!!1!one!2!!1

I cut the lid with a jigsaw.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1577.jpg
Plan for the plexi:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1578.jpg
I did a rough cut on purpose,
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1580.jpg
so I could file it down without worrying about taking off too much with the initial cut.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1581.jpg
All filed and smooth.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1582.jpg
Time for the pexi, but
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1583.jpg
it doesn't sit even.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1584.jpg
So I filed and cut more tabs underneath.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1585.jpg

aaand in between battery charges of my camera, I found out that the plexi was too thick. I need something thin enough to willingly bend with the contours and the shape of the 360 lid, and something that won't be crushed against my heatsink when put all back together. So for now, I put it back together without any plexiglass to check it out and to play some Halo 2 before I call it a night.

I know what I want to do now with the Project. Here's the next steps to the project:

I have it torn apart again.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1721.jpg
I'm making a window for the DVD drive.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1722.jpg
I have it kinda sketched out, but in order to get the right lines,
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1723.jpg
I used a folded piece of paper
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1724.jpg
to make the perfect shape I want,
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1725.jpg
and then traced it.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1727.jpg
And 10 minutes later I have my window plans.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1728.jpg
If it's powered off with no disc in it, I don't want plain gray plastic to be seen, so I'm gonna paint the disc tray color-changing paint, the ol' burple color.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1729.jpg
I think it'll look good.

Time to disassemble the hard drive.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1735.jpg

All disassembled:

The 120 GB Hard Drive:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1739.jpg
This side will be seen thru the window.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1740.jpg

Now to map the window.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1742.jpg
Remember that paper?
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1747.jpg
It's a big help to make templates to trace.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1748.jpg
That's about it. Next will be cutting the windows.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1749.jpg
I just need to add blue lights inside the hard drive, and it'll be even better than before.

Ok, let's get started.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1750.jpg
Now that I got some pilot holes,
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1752.jpg
I can move on to the bigger tools.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1753.jpg
Slight cuts:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1754.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1755.jpg
Getting into shape.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1756.jpg
And we have a window.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1757.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1758.jpg
Now to smooth it all out.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1759.jpg
This side was easy to smooth out.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1760.jpg
Unfortunately it's uneven.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1761.jpg
So after another hour of working with the files, I got it close to perfect. Like the lid, I'll get these machine smoothed someday so they'll be perfect and straight.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1762.jpg
Now to assemble it.

Needs LED's. It's modded, yeah, but in the midst of all the other blue light, it kinda gets lost.

Still, bitchin'. :D

I just need to add blue lights inside the hard drive, and it'll be even better than before.

Already planned. :D

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure how interested an imployer would be in the fact that you can take something and void the warranty so eloquently. ;)

The way I look at it:

360: $515
Parts: $130

Total: $645

Worth: $1000-1500

1000-645=355
1500-645=855

For my work, I can come ahead $355-855.

If I were charging,
$645+20(H)

H =ing work hours, at $20/hr for labor.
I have about 50 hrs in it.

$645+20(50)=$1645

$1000 profit

Still though, hurry up on the LED's. If I had the money, I'd try and buy Drei Sechzig from you, it being quite bitchin' and all.

Mitt,

Man, quick question:::
I'm going crazy trying to aquire a Elite.
Where did you buy yours?
What was the price?

Thanks man! :)

Walmart, at 7% Pennsylvania sales tax, $515. Shelf prices are still $479.99. I don't have an exact record on the price because I paid cash.

Cool cool.
Then that's what I'm looking for.
I was just wondering if I was getting nailed on the price.

I'm going to look in-stores for them today...
Cause CompUSA.com (( WARNING)) has them for what you said... 480ish.

Question:::
You did the fan mods because... it ran really hot?
Did they help?
I mean, the coolness factor of your Elite went through the roof...
:D

Yet the temperatures... better?
Thanks Mitt!!!
I'll keep you updated... as I think I'm going to copy your inspiration to modify the 360. :)

The 360 Elites run cooler than the 360's, but after an hour it starts to glitch and skip frames. The 360s freeze faster when laying down then they do standing up, but nevertheless freezes.

Yet the temperatures... better?

After these mods and gaming the whole night on Live, my CPU temps never hit 40*C, and my GPU never hit 50*C. I consider that to be a pretty drastic enhancement over stock.

Thanks Mitt!!!

Update.

I painted Drei Sechzig. If the fans weren't blue, I would of reverted back to the old scheme of Black/Green, but I used Silver Metallic/Dark Blue Metallic. Black/Green may still be a possibility in the future.

Pics will be up when I get off from work.

Well I wasn't a fan of the silver/blue, so I got the case all sanded down. The bad news?

It's too cold to paint, and I don't have access to a paint booth. Solution?

http://www.xcm.cc/360_Ocean%20Blue.jpg

It doesn't come with an HDMI port, and I don't have a dremel, so Llamma.com will be handling that for me. After this case install, Drei sechzig will be 90% done and ready to be shown off.

That looks great mate, I don't have an X-box but looked at the mods you can do to them the other week. U should get the clear plexi top for the DVD drive, that looks awesome.

Here is a list of the cool mods I found:
http://www.coolpc.com.au/catalog/index.php?cPath=146

Here is the see through DVD cover:
http://www.coolpc.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=146&products_id=1395

The DVD cover comes in blue also but only comes as part of this kit which in blue, looks basically like yours.

The boy 4rm oz
11-26-2007, 07:49 PM
No I think it only comes with the kit, the kit also has a see through air duct. That site has got some great upgrades, personally my favorite is the inter cooler with the LCD screen ;).

I added a 4" cold cathode using the 3-pin fan hookup on the 360 motherboard. And the box for the cathode its perfectly over top the viideo output block and the dvd drive.

I added a second cold cathode inside Drei sechzig tonight.

Here it is torn apart:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN2560.jpg

In this picture, you can see how I utilized the factory 3-pin connector that the 360 Elites use for 12V power to power the cold cathode box, so this part was a piece of cake.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN2561.jpg

I removed it from the tube, and placed it on the DVD drive.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN2566.jpg
