View Full Version : So, does anyone here know anything about selling photos to like a stock photography c
Or something like that. I guess licensing would be the correct term to use. But anyways, it's something that interests me. Maybe I could start getting into photography more seriously. So, anyone ever do this kind of thing before or know of what to do and how to start? I guess first I should make a portfolio. Any suggestions for pictures to take for a portfolio?

i would start at a place like http://www.sxc.hu, which is your standard free stock photography site. i'd sign up there and build up my portfolio, that way you can see what pictures need taking, and what people want, and what works etc.
Once you get some attention there, then you could start selling your stock photography. I'm not sure how to go about that, but most stock photography sites are companies, like Getty Images (http://www.gettyimages.com), and they employ photographers to take photos for them.
If you use stock photos a lot, then you'd have some idea of what people want. For example, I have never been able to find a photograph of a flower, straight on, complete with stem and leaves. All the photos I've found of flowers are from the top, which isn't really useful at all. Take photos of things from all angles; it's the angles which are important.
That's all I have to suggest for now, I'm not an expert in stock photography, I just use it a lot.
Well that's a start. Anyone else have some advice?
I no longer have a job as of a few minutes ago, so now I'd like to look into this some more. So does anyone have anything else to add?

Yes. Stock photography success is based around specialisation based on your own interests or a particular market niche and having a great portfolio.
All forms of photgraphy are highly competitive markets and you do need to be very good and quite focussed on what you are doing to succeed.
You probably need 1000+ seriously good images in one specialist field before you will get a paying stock agency to take you on their books. They are inundated with offers.
