Monday I've bought finalCut Studio 2 (I know CrimsonSky, it's Mac, but it's at work, I have no choice...) To install it I needed the OSX 10.4.9, so I intalled it. But then Avid stopped working cause it dont support updates till OSX 10.4.3
First conclusion: mac suck!!! I did not installed a new OS, only made an update :dead: Bad Idea.
So I reinstalled everything cause at that time I needed more Avid then FinalCut.
Time to find the install disks, back up everything, I lost 1 day.
Next morning I was in formation for the new P2HD (really nice camera BTW)
While I was there, a Director went to make some editing. He saw that an update was available, so he did it :dead:
When I came back I had to redo everything, but this time I installed a dual boot, one for FinalCut and the other for Avid.
Meanwhile, the HDD of another editing room (another G5) died.
We have 2 editing room, and both were dead, so I bring my PC to the rescue.
for 2 days everything worked well (if we consider that busting our deadlines is not a problem)
Then I leaved the same director on my PC for 1 evening, so he can work on his project. Stupid me, I should have locked a couple of features, like the Nvidia OC program... he did it... A lot more then he should have done...
When I came back the next morning, my PC did not want to boot(well he did, but only till the logon screen)
The director said he did not touch anything (probably a little lie here), so I started troubleshooting:
boot in safe mode: ok
Boot in VGA mode: ok
Normal boot: Nop

my boss paid me a new vid card (nice from him) but unfortunatly, the board did not want to recognize it.
So I got another one. Same results.
I started to cry internally thinking it was the mobo.

Finally I tried a last thing, reinstall the drivers. I WORKED!!! After a couple of speaking with the director, he admit having touched the OC tool, without knowing what it was...

Man... I still use XP so I can play my games, that and I don't have the money for the 2gb RAM upgrade and a copy of Vista. That director of yours seems to like messing with things... no matter what it is or if he knows what it does...

Note to all: Don't know what it is, don't touch it.

EDIT: Forgot to add this earlier... It seems like you've got yourself a Pointy Haired Boss.

jeezus when i was a kid i ripped w/e i could get my hands on apart to see how it worked.... it may cause the odd issue.... but screwing around with things promotes knowledge

The difference between the modders and idiots like your boss is that we modders know what **** does.

It's that we try to figure out what something does before using it. If you see a button with some words in another language above it, would you a) press it, or b) figure out what it means first?

If you chose a), you're an idiot, lol.

I mean, the nVidia OC utility has a thing that'll let you know if the settings are safe. It's called not being an idiot when it comes to seeing what things do. Just use common sense, I'm not here to tell you how to do things, you break your ****, whoop dee doo, you broke something, not mine, lol.

Yep, Mac sucks.

I've been going through the exact same **** right now. Failed mobo. Bought a new one. Heatsink doesn't fit. Bought a new one. No Internet. XP Activation over the phone. Crap drivers for my mobo. Still no internet. ~10 DVDs of info. backing-up. Still need more DVDs. Next I'm going to wipe my hard drive of everything; Gentoo, Windows, linux-swap, all that. Then I'm going to re-install XP (which will be a licensing nightmare...) and install Arch. Money lost: ~$200. Time lost: ~1.5 weeks. Tech induced headaches: ~6. What did I gain? A new mobo, a new CPU cooler (which I didn't need because my Blue Orb did the job) and a reason to install Arch.

Fun. I hate it when technology fails too. I lost about $100 earlier this year because a crap Socket A CPU died on me and I had to buy a new mobo, CPU, and a video card to replace it. The video card because a) the new mobo didn't have an onboard one and b) because I like games, can't have crap for playing those, lol.

BTW it's not my boss who's broke my PC, it's a Director. Hopefully, he's gone yesterday for a month in Europe, to write the new scenario of is next movie. The good thing is that everything work fine now, but I've been trough a real nightmare.
I had to fix so many things, that I said to myself: go and try something new, so I'm writing this post from my first Linux intallation :) I might say that fedora is really nice. No problem at all during installation. I installed it on an old P3 900MHz, and I thing this comp never been that fast.

I should almost get some new RAM for my old craPC if Linux is that much less demanding and make the thing into a media PC or something. I'd just have to find a CD drive, HDD, and RAM... may be something to look into.

Glad to hear you got everything together and working again and that the Pointy Haired Director went to Europe, lol.

Linux is lees demanding for sure, that's the first reason I tried it. But this PC is for file sharing trough my home network. If I can find a good mp3 reader, maybe I'll turn my Atlon 3800+ into a linux station as well. for now my media center run into XP media center.
Anyone know a mp3 reader for Linux? I've read that mp3 is too much patented to be on linux, but maybe someone have an alternative. I dont want to have to recode 500GB of mp3 into ogg or flac.

Actually, you _can_ have MP3s on Linux, they just can't ship out MP3 compatibility on the discs. You have to install compatibility yourself, but that's no problem. As for a good reader, what do you need? iPod syncing, or just playing? For a good player, I recommend AmaroK (http://amarok.kde.org/). It's very nice IMO. It also has iPod compatibility from what I read.

Some MP3 reading for Linux.
