"en·dor·phin
–noun
any of a group of peptides occurring in the brain and other tissues of vertebrates, and resembling opiates, that react with the brain's opiate receptors to raise the pain threshold."

This mod will consist of two mods.

The case will be a Shuttle case:

http://www.hardwareportal.ru/Computers/Shuttle.sn26p/Shuttlesn26p-1sm.jpg

That, my friends, is a Shuttle XPC SN26P. This is a MONSTER of a SFF PC.

Interested in the new platform? Well, the board is amazing.

-> It's a socket 939 based board, supporting regular A64, Athlon X2, and Athlon FX.
-> It's got an nVidia nForce 4 SLI chipset (yes, i said SLI).
-> It's got two DIMM slots, dual channel of course.
-> 7.1 channel on board audio
-> Gigabit LAN
-> FOUR SATA ports
-> And last, but certainly not least, it's got a frikken 350W PSU!! 350W! These Shuttle PSUs are so efficient. This PSU powered my FX60, both my 7800GTs, a DVD RW, and a HDD, and it was asking for more. I almost put a frikken 8800GTX in here. I have one lying here at my house, it's one of my friend's card, i wanted to run it so bad.

Here's a few plans that i have already:[LIST]
Most of the hardware will be watercooled. The CPU, GPU, and Chipset will all be watercooled.. I have already obtained the watercooling components. I'll be using Koolance Blocks, a Coolwave pump, and a Swiftech Raddy.
The entire front Fascia will be removed and i'll make a new one.
The case will also obviously be getting a new paint job, colour will be a brilliant white with a red plexi trim and red water.

Now here's the part where this mod will differ slightly from other mods. For a number of reasons, this case will have NO optical drive inside the case. Mainly because this case is TINY and i have to fit a pump in here, but also because i hardly ever use an optical drive. So i have a plan that will allow me to use an optical drive with this machine anyway, and this plan is what the second mod is about:

Second Part of Endorphin

I need an external optical drive, but there's no way in HELL i'm gonna pay over 1K (ZAR) for one, so i'll MAKE one, but one with FAR more functionality than a regular external optical drive. This one will include a few added features.

I'm going to build an external enclosure that will house a DVD writer, two hard disks for extra storage (a 160GB and a 120GB), a 120mm fan to cool the HDDs, and a USB hub. The Optical drive, USB hub, and HDDs will all eventually run from the enclosure through a SINGLE USB cable to the PC.

Now i need to explain in more detail how i plan on doing all of this. The optical drive and the two hard disks will be connected to a USB hub inside (lets call this HUB1) the enclosure via IDE to USB adapters. The external USB hub (we'll call it HUB 2) will ALSO be connected to this internal USB hub. This internal hub will be what connects to the PC. So if you plug in this USB hub, you'll connect the Optical drive, both HDDs, and the external USB hub to the PC.

So, now you're probably wondering how i plan on powering all of this huh? Well, i managed to get my hands on a pretty small 350W PSU. It was nice and small. Unfortunately it randomly died on me, so now i'm forced to use another PSU i have. Also just a generic PSU. Nothing more is necessary for a few HHDs. This PSU will come out of it's housing and i'll put the bare, to preserve space. This PSU will power everything in the enclosure - the DVD RW, both HDDs, the 120mm fan, and the USB hubs (yes, i'm gonna buy USB hubs that need 5V so that they can power hungry devices like my portable 20GB laptop HDD). This PSU will get power from a regular power cable.

Here's a diagram to help explain:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more/genocide1.jpg

This enclosure will also have 2 LCD displays in front to display the temps of the two HDDs.

I'm thinking that i might add individual switches to all the devices within the enclosure so that i can power up only the ones i want to use.

Now the case mod and this external enclosure mod will run hand in hand, but the external enclosure wont necessarily always be in use, and i can plug it into another PC if need be.

As you can see, this is a pretty large amount of goodies, and i can't express how happy i am regarding this sponsor. Henk, Thanks again man! :D

Unfortunately that Team RAM died on me. Thanksfully though, Prophecy sent me a nice kit of Musking RAM:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3676.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3677.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3679.jpg

That's the EM3200 2GB kit.

Thanks Prophecy!

Okay, so let me explain what i need all of this stuff for:

1: The HDD. This HDD will go into the actual PC case. The HDD i have in there now is an IDE disk which will look HORRIBLE and potentially ruin this mod. I have other hard disks that will go in the external enclosure.

2: The three Vantec Enclosures. The enclosures will be pulled apart for the guts. I need the PCB that's inside them that converts IDE to USB. The three PCBs from the three enclosures will be used for the two HDDs and the Liteon DVD-RW that's going into the enclosure.

3: RAM. Well this will obviously go into the machine.

4: The DVD-RW. The DVD Writer will be going into the external enclosure.

5: Two D-Link hubs. This is a cool part. Both hubs will be going into the external enclosure, however, one will be internal, and the other will be external, but not completely external. Let me explain. The one hub will be available from the outside of the enclosure, just 7 ports for any devices or whatever. The second hub will be inside, and the two HDDs, the DVD-RW, the external hub will all be connected to it. The internal hub will then have it's cable running out of the enclosure to whichever PC i connect it to.

6: The Antec Tricool fan: Man i love Tricool fans. I have 4 of them in epiphany, great fans these. This one will be in the enclosure to cool the two HDDs.

So that's what all these goodies are for.

Just let me point out that, as far as i know, nobody has ever been sponsored for Case modding in South Africa. It seems that Prophecy has really got an interest in the SA enthusiast PC market and they're really trying to get modding in SA to a better standard. I'm most certainly not saying that they'll sponsor every second Joe, hell, maybe i'm the only person they'll ever sponsor, maybe i'm the first of MANY, but i'm sure that many more companies will follow in Prophecy's tracks and start making an effort to make modding a big thing in this country.

Very funny. That sticker will have to come off since i'll be watercooling these cards.

So now the specs of the PC are finalized:

Shuttle SN26P
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice
2x 1GB Team Extreme DDR500
2x Legend 7600GT SLI
1x Seagate 160GB SATA2
1x Seagate 250GB SATA2

Not too shabby :D

I ordered some little red LCDs for the external enclosure. They dont LOOK very red in the pics, but in real life they're very very red. Perfect :P

PERFECT

DAE_JA_VOO

And the power connectors:

The regular molexes:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2219.jpg

The ATX connectors:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2221.jpg

And these are the cool ones. Molexes that have caps, end caps:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2223.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2224.jpg

Very cool!

I also got a Vandal Resistant Switch from electronics123 to see if i like it:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2226.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2227.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_2228.jpg

I think i like it.

It needs some polish, but otherwise it's cool.

Here's the radiator i got for the mod. It's a Swiftech dual 120mm raddy:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2763.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2765.jpg

And here it is compared to the raddy i was planning on using. It's a Koolance singe 120mm raddy:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2815.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2816.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2817.jpg

I decided to get a bigger raddy because i'll be using SLI, and i'll feel a bit more comfy with a dual 120mm raddy...

The next hurdle was barbs. The waterblocks that will be used throughout the mod are Koolance blocks, and therefore the tubing is small - 6mm. However, the barbs that i got with the raddy are 1/2" barbs:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2770.jpg

Compared to the tubing that will be used:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2772.jpg

So i had to source new barbs. First thing that came to mind was Hydroline. They hook me up with all the barbs i need. If they don't have the barbs i need, they MAKE the barbs for me. In this case they quoted me something like R130 for the two barbs, which is a bit rough IMO. So i hit Builders' Warehouse. I was pleasantly surprised to find that i could compile my own barbs out of barbs that are meant for Air Compressors. For each barb i had to buy two parts:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2778.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2779.jpg

They fit into each other to make the perfect barb:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2786.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2784.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2789.jpg

Perfect fit!

Another packet of goodies arrived tonight from the USA:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2792.jpg

Some nice red cable sleeving:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2794.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2799.jpg

And some red heatshrink:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2803.jpg

I don't know if i like the heatshrink though.... Also, it's too big for this sleeving, so i'll have to import some smaller heatshrink...

And then also some more connectors:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2806.jpg

First two are just two more Molexes:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2808.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2811.jpg

Man they're cool.

And the other two connectors are quite interesting actually. Motherboards generally have a 20 or 24 pin connector, but this Shuttle's motherboard is different. It has TWO connectors - a 6 pin, and an 8 pin. So i bought some new ones:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2812.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more2/IMG_2814.jpg

Just thought i would show you guys pics of the (basically) complete SketchUps. I didn't spend a lot of time on the rear tubing mounts because they'll be just like the mounts on top, and i'm REALLY just too lazy to model them...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/01.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/02.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/07.jpg

And i've basically finished the design for the external enclosure.

Here are the images, high res images under these ones. I suggest you have a look at the high res ones, much nicer ;)

That's the basic idea for the final design.

This morning i started with the plexi cover that will sit towards the top of the case. I first made a little template out of ABS plastic:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3689.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3690.jpg

Seemed to fit well. Then i grabbed a piece of red plexi:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3693.jpg

OMW this stuff is nice:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3694.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3695.jpg

Too bad Maizey cut it like n00bs. Look at this:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3696.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3697.jpg

That forces me to have to sand for an eternity to get those chips out. What's worse is that i can't use any powertools for the sanding because i'm a sissy and i need the lines to be as straight as possible, and in my opinion, nothing gives straighter lines than sanding by hand. So, i masked up the plexi:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3698.jpg

And then started off with some of this goodness:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3699.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3700.jpg

That paper is so rough it's not even funny. So, after the 36, the plexi looks like this:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3703.jpg

Then it was time for some 80 grit. After the 80, the plexi looks like this:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3705.jpg

And then some 220:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3706.jpg

After this, the next smoothest paper i have is frikken 1200. That jump is too big and means that i have to sand for a while on the 1200. I'm too lazy to get in my car and go buy something like 600 grit, so i just sanded with the 1200. After the 1200, i used 2000. Many guys say that the 2000 pointless, but you need to see how smooth this plexi is after 2000. Have a look:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3711.jpg

Smoother than a baby's bottom. lol.

So tired of sanding :( And i'm hungry....

I needed to do a few quick mods to the chassis. Like drill out a couple of rivets:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3714.jpg

And cut a few pieces of alu that were in the way:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3718.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3719.jpg

Then it was time to carry on on the piece of plexi i started with. I remasked it and marked it for cutting:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3721.jpg

And here it was cut to size, all it needed was sanding:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3722.jpg

And then while sanding it, i frikken owned my finger. It doesn't look bad, but it hurts like hell and my finger is numb :|

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3723.jpg

It's one of those things that hurt like crap but look like a scratch. Anyway, after drilling a whole lot of holes for mounting and for space for the cable management system, i had a test fit:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3724.jpg

Perfect.

DAE_JA_VOO
07-01-2007, 06:49 PM
Then i had one last hole to make in the plexi. I had been dreading this because i've never made a hole like this before, and i expected it to be tough. Just watch the pics ;)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3725.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3727.jpg

Done:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3728.jpg

Don't get me wrong, it was difficult, but not as difficult as i was expecting.

Okay, so now that plexi was done. Time for another test fitment:

That pretty hole:

Tested the cables from the PSU. Fits perfectly:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3736.jpg

And then i made a protective cover for the plexi out of bubble wrap, and that will be locked away until i need it again.

Man, you keep pumping out great stuff! Question, what do you use to cut the holes in the plexi? They look pretty small, but they're very clean! I'd love to know how you do it.

Thanks man :) Which holes are you talking about? Because all the holes in that panel except the one for the PSU cables were made with a drill. Some of them are 4mm, some of them are 6.5mm.

The hole for the PSU cables was more complex though. I made two 20mm holes first with a holesaw, and then cut out the middle piece with my scrollsaw, and then files and sanded the edges :)

I like the way you work! But seriously, what is up with all these people just "sending" you stuff? The way its sounds to me is: some guys calls you up out of the blue and says, "Hey, do you want some free graphics cards?". Anyway, cool mod and I can't wait to see how you cram all of that in there!

lol, not exactly. When i start a new project i tell my sponsors what i need and they send it to me ;)

The have sponsored me because they know i can give them a lot of advertising because of my work. I'm a writer for the PCFormat magazine here in South Africa. I do modding guides and so on for the mag, and there's a link to my website there, and my sponsors get their place on my site, so lots of advertising for them, in return for lots of goodies for me :)

Thanks!

So yesterday i had to do some pretty crap work. Look at this. This is the power switch:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3739.jpg

Not any normal switch though. That switch plugs into this PCB:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3740.jpg

Here's the back of it:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3742.jpg

Now that interfaces with the motherboard, here:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3745.jpg

Like so:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3744.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3743.jpg

So there's no easy way of powering this thing. It doesn't have two pins on the board somewhere.

Anyway, after about an hour's work, i found the power and reset pins:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3747.jpg

lol, how ghetto can a startup get!!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3738.jpg

Okay, let's continue. Looky what i got for this mod today:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3757.jpg

That's an X2 4400+. Not the greatest stepping, but hey, it's a 4400+. Added to my ever growing collection of A64/X2 CPUs (another two not in the pic):

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3760.jpg

I also did a crap load of dremeling/sanding/filing to the chassis. Random little edges like this needed to go:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3750.jpg

So today i went and had some plexi cut. I could have done it by hand, but i needed all the pieces to be of IDENTICAL size, and i figured a laser cutter would be simpler :)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3749.jpg

Those are for the face of the case, and these too:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3748.jpg

Clear panel test fitted:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3751.jpg

Perfect. Only bummer is that we had to cut at 75 DPI, which sucks, and gives rounded corners like this:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3754.jpg

More sanding for me eh?

An idea of what the layout of the front will be:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3774.jpg

Masked up almost everything, but ran out of masking tape:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3778.jpg

I also started work on the piece of plexi that will be on the inside of the front of the case. Marked out and ready for cutting:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3768.jpg

Cut out and test fitted:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3771.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3772.jpg

Perfect.

So tomorrow i'm gonna try and finish the front. Hopefully i'll get it done.

Update time.

I masked up the plexi face pieces and the extra red pieces:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3780.jpg

Holes drilled and test fitted. Man, it's looking sexy even still covered in masking tape:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3785.jpg

Time to do some more work on the chassis so that i can get this face fitted. So i masked up what i needed, marked the holes, and drilled them:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3787.jpg

Update time.

Guys, i have fantastic news :D

Dunno about rules regarding the following here, so please let me know if i'm being naughty ;)

I have just "signed" with another sponsor. What's even cooler is who the sponsor IS...

MNPCTech!

That's right. MNPCTech. MNPCTech is one of the worlds most well known modding companies and their mods are known by most modders worth their salt :P

So, i'm absolutely ecstatic about the new sponsorship :D

And on the way to me right now from MNPCTech in the US, is the following:

http://www.mnpctech.com/VandalResistantSwitchs.jpg

Two Vandal Resistant Switches.

And:

http://www.mnpctech.com/Machined.Billet.Case.Feet.jpg

A set of Billet Machined Aluminium case feet

I was offered a whole lot of other goodies too but i have everything i need already :( so i had to decline :(

No matter, i will have more projects in the future and i will get some more goodies then :P

I haven't really modded much in the last two days. Been planning like mad, so modding had to wait. But i did do a little work.

Here's jack chilling with me while i work:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3793.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3797.jpg

So i started work on the motherboard cover. This cover wont be red like i had it in the sketchups. It's

gonna be white with some red plexi on it ;)

Lines drawn and measured, ready for cutting:

Absolutely perfect. I wish i had time right now to show you guys what else i'm gonna do with the cover but i don't, and i'm going away for the weekend, so i'll only be back on sunday evening or monday. You guys will get an update then ;)

Also a little info for you guys. The case itself will be getting anodized. I was thinking of making it red like the plexi i'm using. What do you think? Along with that, i think the heatspreaders on my Mushkin RAM will also be getting anodized.

Anyway, that's it. Enjoy :)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3849small.jpg

where do you get it laser cut? do you do it yourself or do you go some where?
There's a place here in South Africa that i go to and do the cutting.

Update time!

Sorry it's been so long guys. I was studying for an exam that i wrote on tuesday (which i frikken destroyed, by the way).

Okay, so on my last update i showed the motherboard cover. That's where carried on now. I marked off some mesh for some dremel goodness:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_3858.jpg

After i had cut it out, i tested to see what it would look like:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4088.jpg

Looks great IMO. So, i needed to make some holes in the red plexi, so that i could hold the mesh in place. Plexi marked:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4089.jpg

Holes drilled and test fitted:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4090.jpg

And mesh added!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4092.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4093.jpg

Top view:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4097.jpg

Holy Moley, that looks seksi. I'm very happy with the result. Please keep in mind that all the clear plexi (like the main part of the mobo cover) will be WHITE.

So, the motherboard panel is pretty much done, it just needs paint. Next job was getting the switches fitted. The switches i'm using are the ones that MNPCTech sent me, the Vandal Resistant Switches. Thanks MNPCTech for the switches! (gotta love sponsorships :P )

http://www.mnpctech.com/VandalResistantSwitchs.jpg

So i have the Front cover marked up:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4100.jpg

Once that was done, i fitted the switches:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4112.jpg

Ooh-la-laa!!

Jackson paid me a visit:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4109.jpg

Then i ran into a bit of a problem:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4103.jpg

I though i was done cutting chunks out of the chassis. Obviously not. So, i fired up Mrs Dremel and here's the result:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4105.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4106.jpg

Then i needed to mod the inside plexi piece to accommodate the switches, so i drilled some holes into it:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4108.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4110.jpg

PERFECT:

Sorry i've been so scarce with the updates. I wrote a big exam last week, and the modding that i've done since was very time consuming, but yielded great results. So here we go.

So i wanted to fit these gorgeous aluminium feet to the case. Here's the bottom of the case before the modding:

Two feet fitted:

Looks amazing!

Next step was to start the lighting in the case. I thought it would look cool if i had some LEDs shining out the bottom of the case, to give somewhat of an underglow effect. So i marked the bottom of the case for some drilling:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4194.jpg

I then sanded the LEDs down. They were too long, so i sanded them all down to a more suitable size:

Wow these white LEDs are nice.

Then i fitted the LEDs in the case. Here's my temporary power solution:

Looks great!

So, that's the update. This afternoon i'll carry on with the lighting in the case.

Oh, by the way, the colour scheme of the case has changed AGAIN. The White and red would have been nice, but i think that black and red will be so much nicer! So, the white is being scrapped, black will take it's place.

Enjoy the rest of your week guys

Update time!

Yesterday i started with some more lighting. I pulled out one of the support beams in the chassis. I then drilled four 8mm holes and fitted LED holders. Here we have the four holders and two LEDs mounted:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4228.jpg

It looks great! I just need to do the other beam now too.

I woke up this morning and went and modded in my pajamas. LOL.

I marked a piece of black plexi to be cut. This will be for the front panel of the case: (note the pink pajamas :P )

Update time!

I got home from class and carried on working on the new black front panel. I sanded it a little bit more and them marked it for some drilling:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4243.jpg

I drilled all the small holes, and then i started with the bigger ones. For the bigger ones i used a holesaw. Each time you drill a hole with a holesaw, you need to take the piece of plexi out of the saw, the piece that you cut. Sometimes that piece is like, RAZOR sharp. Which was the case today, so i pwned my finger again:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4246.jpg

Smile of blood?

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4249.jpg

That's pretty cool (in a sick, masochistic kinda way. lol.

Drilling the second hole:

All done:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4253.jpg

Then i put the whole contraption together:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4254.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4255.jpg

LOL thanks guys.

Nah it doesn't hurt too much, most of the cuts i get are JUST into the meaty parts of my fingers, so it's not that bad ;)

Update!

I needed to remake the motherboard cover, as the original one was made out of clear plexi, which i was going top paint, but i decided to change the colour scheme and that meant that a new cover needed to be made. So here's the original one, still masked up:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4262.jpg

I took the red plexi and the mesh off:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4263.jpg

Then i got a piece of black plexi and marked it for cutting. Scroll saw time:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4264.jpg

Cut out and sanded to size:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4265.jpg

It's so pretty!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4266.jpg

Then i masked it up again and marked off what i needed to remove:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4269.jpg

After a few intimate hours (only about ONE hour) with the scroll saw, sand paper, and needle files, i had it cut out perfectly:

Update time!

Sheesh guys, sorry it's been so long since the last update. I've been incredibly busy, and will be until the end of the month (international exams) so dont expect any updates :( Sorry guys.

Anyway, here's what i've managed to do.

If you remember the sketchups i made, you'll see that one of the hard disks are at the top of the case, in front, like so:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4279.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4280.jpg

I did quite a lot of brainstorming trying to figure out which would be the best way to go about getting the HDD mounted like that. I eventually decided to make four little plexi goodies that would support and hold the HDD in place.

This is what i did. First thing was to mask up some plexi and get all the measurements done:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4281.jpg

And then some scroll saw love:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4282.jpg

Done cutting:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4286.jpg

After i had sanded them to make the edges perfect, i bent them:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4292.jpg

Drilled some holes:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4296.jpg

Test fitting:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4293.jpg

Then i sanded the edges to the sizes i wanted and rounded the corners nicely:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4300.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4301.jpg

This black plexi is very reflective. Check out the nVidia logo in the reflection:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4303.jpg

And here they are all done. They just need to get polished:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4304.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4305.jpg

And this is where the HDD will sit in the case:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4306.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4307.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4308.jpg

I did a little more work on something else too - a nice piece of red plexi on the bottom of the case, but i'm not completely done with it yet, so no updating on that.

That's all for now, unfortunately. End of the month, modding like mad again!

Why not just flip the drive over and use the 4 mounting holes in the drive?
Screw straight through the plexi and into the drive.

Update time! FINALLY!

I've been incredibly busy for the last while guys. I've been writing some really tough exams, and i'm still busy. I'm writing another one on wednesday, and then again on the 25th, but i just had to mod. I started getting withdrawal symptoms :P

Okay, before the update, i'd like to run a few things by you guys.

My original plan was to have the water tubing run on top of the case, like this:

http://www.daejavoo.com/media/Endorphin/concept/01.jpg

But i have since decided that i want the tubing INSIDE the case. I think that on top, it would look a bit messy, and too "much". What do you guys think?

Also, i've kinda hit a wall with this mod at the moment, because i need to cut the shell of the case. The shell is in a "U" shape over the top of the case, like the covers for cases YEARS ago, remember? Now, i want this one in 3 pieces - 2 sides and a top. This will make my life a million times easier. However, cutting a PERFECT line, no thicker than 1mm in thickness is near impossible, and if i screw up, i can't just buy another one. So i've been trying to find a way to do this. This isn't something that can be done perfectly by hand, so i need some kind of machinery to do it. I spoke to my step father about it, and he says he knows a dude who knows a dude... etc etc etc and he can have it cut with a machine, a really cool machine (too much to explain) so i'm waiting for that.

I basically can't continue until i have the shell cut because i need to fit the raddy to know where i can fit all the internals, so for now, i'm pretty screwed.

Anyway, here's a little bit of modding done:

Remember these Sexy case feet i got from MNPCTech?

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4406.jpg

Well, they came with mounting hardware, but:

1: It was ugly (not that anyone will see it, but you know how i am...)
2: It was too big

So, i went and bought 4 6mm allen cap screws. Then, i needed to find a way to make a bolt for the screws, because regular bolts are WAY too think (they have to fit between the motherboard and the bottom of the case, which is about 5mm). So i made these:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4573.jpg

This is how. This one was my first design:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4558.jpg

But i changed that slightly. Basically, what i did was cut out 4 pieces of plexi:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4560.jpg

Rounded them a bit:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4563.jpg

Drilled 2mm holes in the center:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4565.jpg

Put them on the dremel as if they were a disc:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4567.jpg

And SANDPAPER!! About half way:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4568.jpg

Then i just sanded on and on and then gave them a nice angled edge. After that, i drilled a 5mm hole in the center, and then ran a 6mm tap through to give them a thread. Here is the result:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4569.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4570.jpg

The Allen Cap screw i spoke of:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4571.jpg

And this is the final result. VERY nice in my opinion:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4572.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4574.jpg

I know that nobody will ever see them, but i don't want anything ugly in this case ;)

That's all i've done :( (stupid exams) But there's more to come :)

For the tubing on top, since it's kind of vulnerable there, I say put it on the inside, but, have some tubes up there just for the hell of it as it looks cool like that. Don't have water go through them, just have like a dummy tube up there or get some lights or something like that.

Okay, update time.

I haven't been able to mod for a while due to some exams i was writing and an array of other stuff that really chowed my time. I have, however, been working for about a week on something else, which i'll post when it actually looks like something :P

I was also unable to carry on with Endorphin because i needed to have the casing (not the chassis, the shell) cut into three pieces, as opposed to the "U" shape it was in. My step dad told me he could have it done by a guy he knows, but after like 3 weeks of waiting i got sick of it. I couldn't carry on modding because i need the raddy fitted, which i can't do properly until the casing is in 3 pieces. And i can't do ANYTHING else until the raddy is fitted, so i was screwed.

Anyway, i got tired of waiting and started hunting for a place that could cut the shell for me. I needed it to be a perfect, thin cut, which is why i didn't do it myself. I went to 4 different laser cutting places, and even a frikken ENGINEERING place, nobody could cut it for me. Eventually i was sent to a laser cutting place in the CSIR. Their laser cutter is about the size of my garage. Madness i tell you.

So they cut it for me, and they did it for free too :D I just got it back from them now. Here are some photos:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4851.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4857.jpg

Now i can FINALLY start modding again. I might actually have another update by tonight ;)

While i'm posting, i wanna show you guys something. My last project, Epiphany (http://www.daejavoo.com/pages/project-epiphany/final-pictures.php), was published in the CustomPC, and i got an email from them last week with a link to the feature on the website. Update!

I worked for about 3 hours today, on one single piece of plexi. To crown it all, i'm not even finished. Sometimes i wish i wasn't such a perfectionist :|

Anyway, i decided to start on the panel that will hold the raddy. I took another look at my sketches:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/endpan2.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/endpan1.jpg

(these are updated sketches by the way, which i have yet to post. I will put them up once i'm done).

I thought that the sketches looked cool, but there was definitely something missing. After staring and staring, i found it. There just wasn't enough detail, there needed to be something more there. So, i set out to make a piece of plexi that would sit between the raddy and the side panel.

Please excuse the crap photos. The lighting in my modding room is just no good for decent photos. I'm gonna see if i can get a proper light up in that room.

So, i grabbed an off-cut piece of plexi i had lying around. This is the same as the red plexi that will be used throughout the mod:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4863.jpg

Then my scroll saw had it's way and cut the plexi to size:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4867.jpg

After a bit of sanding, i masked it up and made some markings:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4870.jpg

Fan mounting holes, as well as fan holes made:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4875.jpg

Then i made the two holes for the barbs on the raddy and test fitted:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4877.jpg

After that, all that was left to do was round the corners and sand until i started crying:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4878.jpg

I'm still not finished though. Tomorrow, i'll finish sanding it and i'll polish the edges. Once that's done, i'll make the relevant holes in the case's side panel. So i should have the raddy fitted by tomorrow. Keep an eye out for the updates :)

Enjoy the weekend guys.
God Bless

Another update!

I woke up and after playing this (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/404612) for about an hour, i decided to force myself away from my PC to go mod. lol.

So, when i finished off yesterday, i had sanded the plexi with 220, but not enough. So this morning, it was more 220, and then i just jumped straight to 1200. After the 1200, i used some 2000. After 2000, that plexi was so smooth http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Smileys/wub.gif

Thanks for the comments guys! :D

UPDATE!!!! WOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!

Okay, so i finished that nice piece of plexi, now it was time for some side panel love. I masked it up and marked all the holes:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4916.jpg

The two 114mm holes DONE.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4917.jpg

The one on the left is about a millimeter to far to the left. The reason for this was that the panel was full of grilles and so on, and that made it SO difficult to drill holes where i wanted to. It was a frikken nightmare, i tell you.

The two holes done for the barbs:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_4927.jpg

And then, a couple of hours work, and VOILA, the fan grille:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5032.jpg

Here's an idea of what the side panel is gonna look like:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5035.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5036.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5040.jpg

I must admit, that looks seksy! So, next up is removing the paint on the panels and then i start work on either the top panel or the other side panel. I'm considering having the other side panel laser cut, because the window that i have planned is incredibly complex, and i simply can't screw up.

That's IT.

Enjoy the week :)

Thanks guys :D

Anyway, here's a small update.

You may remember i mentioned a few updates ago that the OTHER side panel was gonna be quite complex. Well, this is what this update is about. I grabbed the panel and jumped into Sketchup. After doing the sketches i realised that i would be an idiot to try and do it by hand, so laser cutting will have to do this one for me.

Okay, this is a basic idea of the side panel. The blocks you see are the panel's built in mesh grilles:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/panel01.png

Now, if you have a look at where the window will be (the new additional block):

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/panel02.png

You'll see that if i ONLY make that square hole for the window, the panel is gonna look like crap because of the random half mesh grilles. Now i obviously needed to get around that. After a while, i had this basic idea:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/panel03.png

And after an hour and a half of sketching, the result:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/panel04.png

Let me explain what's going on there. The hole right at the top will be ventilation for the HDD, so that whole piece will be mesh. The BIG hole in the middle will be the window. This window will have to be quite thin too due to the size and space restrictions in the case, so i'll probably have a 1.5mm clear plexi window. Lastly, the long hole at the bottom will also be mesh. This one will server as air ventilation fo the board, and this way the fans on the raddy will have ample air to play with, and airflow over the board will be good, so i managed to nail two birds with one stone there.

I'll go and laser cut the plexi quickly tomorrow morning and send the side panel in for laser cutting as well. I think i'll work on the designs for the top panel tonight. I'm actually still not even sure what to do on top yet.

Just a little off topic here: I'm so frikken proud of myself. I wrote an exam today that i completely forgot about until 1am this morning, so i didn't study a thing, and out of the 60 odd guys that wrote the exam, only 6 passed, and i was one of them :D I only got 75.4% though, which i'm not proud of at all, but hey, i didn't study, so i obviously can't expect 95%.

Anyway, i'm gonna work on some sketches tonight, so there might just be another update later.

Hahahaha!! Thanks man! No he didn't, but he should have :P

Update!

Check THIS out! I'm so frikken amped!

I worked the for most of today (bunked class :P ) on the mounting of the Chipset and CPU waterblocks. I sourced koolance blocks for the Chipset and CPU, but i didn't have the mounting hardware, so i had to make some.

I started off with the CPU. I cut a small piece of plexi out of one of the sheets i have, masked it up, and started with some measurements:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5108.jpg

After some intimate time with my scroll saw:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5113.jpg

After that, it was a little more scroll saw work, and then SANDING!! Progress:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5119.jpg

Test fitting:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5124.jpg

Then all i had to do was a little more sanding, and then polish the edges. End result:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5128.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5129.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5134.jpg

I THOUGHT i was finished, until i test fitted and saw that there are four capacitors on the motherboard that were in my way, so, i masked it up again and made some markings:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5136.jpg

Finished:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5137.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5138.jpg

Then i had to make a panel for the BACK of the board that will hold the 4mm rods that will come up through the board into the new mounting hardware:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5142.jpg

Long boring story how i did it, result:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5144.jpg

Sorry for the out of focus image.

Then i made a simple mounting bracket for the chipset block. There's no need for me to explain HOW i did it because you'll see by the images that it really is a simple bracket.

Anyway, here's the final result of today's work:

This is probably the most chuffed i've been with my own work in a while. These pic really don't do it justice. In real life it looks like it was made in a factory.

Too bad nobody will ever see this. lol. Oh well, i'll KNOW about it.

Thanks guys! And thanks Luke for editing for me! :D

Thanks guys :)

Get ready for a hell of an update...

I worked a bit yesterday, as i went and bought myself a press drill. Man i dunno how i lived without this thing before.

Anyway, let's get to the update.

A few months ago i got a nice little koolance flow meter (thanks viceroy!):

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5312_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5315_800.jpg

This little goodie works with a PCI card that koolance sells, and with that setup you can setup warnings and so on. I'm not going to use any of that functionality though, this flow meter is going to be purely an aesthetic addition to the mod. So, i removed the bottom cover (the black piece) and also removed the little PCB. The plan was to simply mount the meter onto a piece of plexi to have in the top section of the case. This was made a little complicated by this:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5319_800.jpg

No problem though. I grabbed a piece of red plexi, cut it to size, gave it a nice bend on the one end, and then after some measurements...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5334_800.jpg

The two holes on the sides are mounting holes, and the bigger hole in the center is for the 6.5mm piece that comes from the meter.

Almost done:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5337_800.jpg

Done. All i need to do now is polish the edges:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5340_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5341_800.jpg

Flow meter mounted:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5342_800.jpg

As you can see, it's a PERFECT fit:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5345_800.jpg

I also mounted the pump. Here we have both of them in the top of the case:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5346_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5347_800.jpg

A nice shot of the flow meter:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5348_800.jpg

Then i quickly needed to get the HDD mounted:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5350_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5353_800.jpg

All three in the case:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5355_800.jpg

I also mounted the reservoirs. I first needed to make the mounting holes:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5360_800.jpg

Fitted:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5362_800.jpg

This is the most amazing tubing i have ever used in my life...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5363_800.jpg

The next step was to make holes in the front of the case for the tubing:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5365_800.jpg

I also had to mod the chassis a bit to accommodate the tubing:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5366_800.jpg

That's as far as i am now. I'm gonna try and see if i can have this mod done before i go on holiday on the 16th. I'm actually aiming to have it done for this coming friday (one hell of a LAN is calling my name) but i'll see how it goes.

Say hello to Jill :D

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5356_800.jpg

Thanks Boy4rmoz :D

Updates FTW!!

I've modded like a mad man for the last few days. I basically modded the whole day today, until about a half an hour ago. What an awesome day it was! I love being done with my studies :D

Okay, first off - the Koolance flow meter. I had a bit of a problem, because the flow meter is meant for 10mm tubing, and the entire loop in this machine will be 1/4" (6mm). This is one of the koolance fittings:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5372_800.jpg

I needed a plan. So i spoke to my step-dad about it and he told me "I'll see what i can do for you tomorrow, just be patient." As it turned out, he machined two adapters for me! They step the 10mm down to 6mm! Awesomeness! I also needed brabs for my Swiftech Raddy (for some or other reason, the barbs i got from P-PCs for the raddy were the COMPLETE wrong size...). So, here are the two adapters and the two barbs:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5369_800.jpg

So here the combo i made for my flow meter so that it's basically a 6mm now:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5373_800.jpg

For some or other reason, i didn't take a photo of the adapters in place... oh well, there are pics later in the update ;)

Moving along...

The front panel didn't actually fit in place 100%, because the screws that hold the support beams in place were in the way. Look:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5377_800.jpg

The screw:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5379_800.jpg

So i need to drill a hole in the first layer of plexi in the front panel so that the screw sinks into the plexi. I was puzzled a bit for a while... "How the hell am i gonna mark where to drill that hole?!" and then i had an Epiphany (lol?). Here was my answer:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5382_800.jpg

Tomato Sauce!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5385_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5388_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5389_800.jpg

Voila!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5392_800.jpg

We need to be resourceful modders! :P

Next up, i shortened some 4mm alen cap screws for the reservoir mounting:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5394_800.jpg

(i think i went through an entire reinforced dremel disc shortening these screws)

Reservoir mountings fitted:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5397_800.jpg

Reservoirs fitted and tubing attached:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5399_800.jpg

Then i moved on to the side panel. I wanted to leave this panel and have it laser cut (it's not like i can just go out and buy another side panel if i screw this one up) but i was in such a mood for modding that i just decided to do it by hand. I was quite scared because, believe it or not, i've NEVER worked with Alu, ever. So, here's the panel:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5401_800.jpg

Masked up:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5403_800.jpg

I spent quite a while marking off what i should cut:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5404_800.jpg

Half way:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5406_800.jpg

Cutting done:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5407_800.jpg

Now came the tedious and time consuming task of sanding and filing the edges straight. Here i was about half way:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5411_800.jpg

Done:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5412_800.jpg

One or two corners need a bit more filing, but otherwise, it's not bad for a first time :D

Then i did a test fit of the frame:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5419_800.jpg

As you can see, there are actually parts of the panel still in view there. That's not problem though, as there will be mesh in the top and bottom holes, the middle hole will be a window.

Next up was the mesh. I want the mesh piece to be one BIG piece with a hole in the middle for the window. this will leave a cool effect with the mesh under the red plexi. So i marked off the mesh i want to cut out:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5421_800.jpg

Cutting:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5424_800.jpg

Done:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5425_800.jpg

Quick look of the mesh under the panel:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5427_800.jpg

Bear in mind that the middle hole will be cut out ;)

That's as far as i got with the window, as i got sick and tired of sanding and filing. I'll finish it tomorrow.

Hmmm... what's next...

Ahh, the top panel. All along i've been wondering what to do with my top panel. A plain black panel just isn't gonna cut it. That's where i got the flow meter idea. I'm sure some of you have been wondering what the point of the flow meter is if it's inside, right? Well, that's what will be one of the things to add some detail to the top panel. Marked off the panel:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5429_800.jpg

Small pilot hole drilled:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5432_800.jpg

40mm hole made:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5434_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5438_800.jpg

The BASIC idea:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5440_800.jpg

That idea will obviously still get "optimized" a hell of a lot, but that's just to give you an idea. When i'm finished, the flow meter will be MUCH closer to the top, and the very top of the meter might actually stick out of the panel. Alternatively, i can make a little window. I'll see how it goes.

I ran into a slight problem though. The bracket i made for the flow meter couldn't work anymore. I'm not sure how i measured wrong, but the flow meter was about 4mm too far INTO the case (like... horizontally), so my only option was to remake the bracket i had made a few days ago.

Here's the old bracket (you can also see how i've stepped the tubing down to 6mm here):

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5446_800.jpg

And the new one:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5442_800.jpg

A nice comparisson:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5450_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5454_800.jpg

Another nice comparisson:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/meters.jpg

As you can see, the difference is VERY slight, but it's there. It's only a couple of millimeters. If i hadn't made the new bracket, the meter wouldn't have been in the center of that hole, and that just won't do.

So, that's all i have for you now. I'll continue tomorrow. I'm planning on making a nice plexi panel for the top of the case, which will also have a hole in for the flow meter. Ooh it's gonna be sexy :D

Anyway, cheers guys, sleep well. I'm dead tired.

Very nice work mate, everything looks fantastic and I can't wait to see this beast completed.

Yeah being done with studies is awesome lol, I had my last exam today (bloody maths haha) so I hope to spend all day tomorrow modding with my new Dremel ;)...well after my driving lesson :).

Update time.

I wasn't planning on posting an update, but i'm bored and at home, so instead of playing Forza 2 for another few hours or watching this David Gilmour DVD again, i thought i'd post an update.

Alright, here are my two 7600GTs that i'll be SLI-ing in this shuttle:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5458_800.jpg

Yes yes, i know that their made by a different Vendor. Long story behind that that nobody cares about, but the point is that they'll work together, but i have to do some modding first! See, when i first got this shuttle, i had my two 7800GTs in here:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/more/IMG_2101.jpg

I had to mod their coolers though, but luckily i wont need to mod any coolers, because the coolers are coming off. So here's what i did. I measured up two identical pieces of plexi that will act as mounting hardware:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5469_800.jpg

Drilled the holes FIRST (only learned this little tip a few weeks ago):

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5470_800.jpg

After cutting them out, i tapped the 4mm holes in the middle with a 5mm thread:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5478_800.jpg

And here is the setup of the two cards. Reminds me SO much of the 7950GX2:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5481_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5482_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5483_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5484_800.jpg

Obviously it will look a million times better when i'm finished. I still need to make appropriately long 3mm rods, polish the plexi, and also get a nice 5mm dome nut for the Legend card's mounting.

I also did some more tubing work:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5486_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5488_800.jpg

Ignore the slight kink between the chipset and first video card, that will be sorted out ;)

Then i started some more work on the mesh. Ahh man i hate working on this mesh... Cut out:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5490_800.jpg

After that, i sanded it to the perfect size, and rounded the corners. I still need to finish the corners though.

Then i needed to make the holes in the plexi frame that will hold the frame, mesh, side panel, and window together. I was scared of doing this, because the mounting screws will be 3mm, and the plexi frame is only 10mm wide. This leaves a HUGE possibility of cracking the plexi. So i needed to mask up the frame, PERFECTLY, so that i could make the markings in the center, PERFECTLY in the center. Masking up this thing was a tedious and time consuming process.... Masking...

Masking...

Masking...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5497_800.jpg

Please... no more...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5495_800.jpg

(please excuse that mess. That's actually a room for all sorts of other crap, and since my modding room is overflowing with other stuff, i have to mod here :P )

I eventually got it done and marked the holes:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5499_800.jpg

And drilled them:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5507_800.jpg

No cracks :D

Anyway, that's it for now. I'm busy making these same holes in the mesh. It's such a crap job... you have NO idea. Each hole takes at least 5 minutes of drilling/filing.

The boy 4rm oz
12-01-2007, 06:46 PM
More plastic W/C brackets, nice.

Yeah I know what you mean about the drilling, I cut out all of my plexi in under an hour and it takes me over an hour to mount a single piece (masking, measuring, drilling and cutting bolts to size).

Boy 4rm oz: Yep, it's always like that. You spend more time mounting plexi you modded than the time you spent modding the plexi :P

Update time!

I'm SO excited to get this update up.

One thing, before i update.... i HATE mesh.... i hate it. It looks so, so good, but working with it is terrible...

ANYWAY. As i said in the last update, i needed to make all the mounting holes in the mesh. My initial method ended up costing me about 10 minutes per hole (there are 14 holes, so that's over 2 hours, just to make a few holes). I eventually thought about using plexi as a guide, and that worked perfectly:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5509_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5512_800.jpg

After some more sanding and filing, it looks like the mesh is almost done:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5515_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5517_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5520_800.jpg

Now i just have to cut a big hole into it. lol.

All it needed now was a window:

All done:

Not too bad for my first side panel mod ever hey? I'm very happy with the result, i think it looks absolutely fantastic. All the panel still needs is a couple of layers of paint :D

By the way, looks like i'm destroying photobucket this month. lol. I've used almost 30GBs of bandwidth since the 12th of November :|

So potentially could you run a lighter over the edges when you are done, to get that ultra gloss?

I've seen it done elsewhere, how hard is that?

Very clean work!

Very clean work!

I have also seen it done but instead of a lighter, one of those small propane torches was used. It seems easy enough, you need to be careful about melting and warping though.

Thanks for all your comments guys!

Yeah, the lighter trick could work, but i far prefer the old school "sand and polish" method. It just looks perfect!

UPDATE!!!

Sheesh guys, it's been ages since an update. I'm sorry about that. It's been due to a handful of things. December was nuts because of holidays and so on, and as soon as i was back from all the holidays, we started some crazy home improvements and i had nowhere to mod. Once the home improvements weren't interfering with my modding room anymore, i decided to do some modding room upgrades. Before:

http://www.daejavoo.com/media/blogpics/3007/IMG_4170.jpg

After:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/moddingroom/IMG_6625_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/moddingroom/IMG_6627_800.jpg

I'm still busy though :P

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/moddingroom/IMG_6636_800.jpg

Anyway, once THAT was out of the way (only last week), i was finally able to start modding again. So, here's the update!

I realised that the HDD would get pretty warm in the upper compartment of the case, so i decided to give it some ventilation. Top panel masked up:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5591_800.jpg

Rough cut:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5592_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5594_800.jpg

All done!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_5595_800.jpg

Then i needed to cut a piece of plexi to go over that for detail, so got a piece of plexi:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6702_800.jpg

Nice red plexi:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6704_800.jpg

Masked up and measured:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6705_800.jpg

Cut out:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6706_800.jpg

Then i measured the hole for the flow meter:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6707_800.jpg

Hole made!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6708_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6709_800.jpg

I still need to soften the edges though...

Anyway, the hole for the HDD was then measured out:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6710_800.jpg

And cut:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6712_800.jpg

Test fitting... fits perfectly!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6714_800.jpg

Then i measured how i wanted to cut it out:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6715_800.jpg

Done!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6718_800.jpg

Test fitting:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6721_800.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6723_800.jpg

So far so good. The next step is to make a border for the HDD hole, and put some mesh in there. It's gonna look VERY good, i'm sure.

I also made a little keyring for myself:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c267/DAE_JA_VOO/Genocide/IMG_6724_800.jpg

That's it. Sorry i've taken so long!

If you're gonna comment, please also let me know what you think of the photos now, if you don't mind. Part of the reason why i put all the white plexi in this room was for photos. Thanks guys!

Ettienne
