I was wondering if there's any way to fix a messed up LCD monitor. I tossed my watch onto my desk and threw it a little too high (it was dark and I was half asleep) and put a small dent in the glass covering the pixels and it now has a screwy little spot in the middle and a nice starburst thing going on around it. Is there any way to fix this?

Note: I don't have a camera, so I can't take any pics, sorry.

Well, other than that **** it still works. In other news, my dad has overreacted and made me feel like **** again over another ****ing accident, ah well. I'm the idiot stuck using a ****ed monitor. Whatever. I'll not worry about it and just transfer all but $20 from my account to pay for it and overdraft to pay for insurance and gas on my truck, whatever. I should have taken up the offer to stay in NY with my grandparents and go to school there.

Well atleast it is useable for the time being. The only possible option to try and work out the kinks, is to open er up. And frankly you could do more damage than has already been done.

Depending on the monitor you can sometimes ding up/bend the thin layer of glass/acrylic which should protect the screen. But in order to verify that there is for one such a cover/coating is rather difficult. As well as trying to get an acrylic screen off a monitor is rather tough without damaging anything.

I guess the moral here is keep it and use it while it works. If and when you replace it, maybe you'd want to take the time to see if you can manage to fix it and share your new found knowledge with others.

Cheers.

I'm probably just gonna use it for now, that's the plan. I wish I didn't mess it up, but oh well, thanks for the advice and if I learn enough in college, I'll open it up and see what I can do. If I can, I'm gonna get one of Minty's monitors and I'm gonna put a small piece of plexi over the front and somehow mount it on there, if I do, I'll make a worklog of it and actually _do_ something around this place, lol. It's not the cover either, it's some glass beneath the cover.

ahh yeah if it's the liquid crystal itself, your pretty well stuck. at least as far as I'm aware. But yes, plexi-screen protectors are a GREAT idea, and you can make em look pretty sweet!

might not have busted the LCD just dented the plastic, causing a pressure point. Kinda like when you press your finger against it. Might be able to replace the plastic in front. Dunno just a thought.

@ Jim: There's a pane of glass behind the plastic or whatever's up front, that's what cracked, lol. Thanks for the suggestion though. It's something I just have to live with.

@ CB: Not gonna happen, I like my watch with the metal band, and it probably would have gotten messed up by whatever hit it with the same general mass and density, if I put plexi up front it would be fine, but I didn't, it's not... it's just annoying though, not too much of a hindrance. If I were a little bit more down and to the left it would have hit in the center of the screen and I would have a permanent crosshair, lol.

hey, 2 things, if it's just the glass that broken, you may be able to pull it off and sanwich some plexi on there instead and flatten everything back to good, also, if you look hard enough depending on what the internal part number/type is you should be able to buy a replacement panel for it, probably at half the cost or less than a new monitor. I've been doing research on it all day so I know it's out there!

You can't replace part of an LCD panel it self.
It's in layers:
(going from top to bottom)
The LCD itself:
Thin plastic
The actual Liquid Crystals
Super small wires going to crystals
Glass panel

All of the above is only about 4mm thick and completely stuck together.

The backlight:
Diffuser filter
Horizontal filter
Vertical filter (not sure whether H or V comes first)
Diffuser Plastic and CCFL
Opaque plastic (blocks all light)

And around the edge of both of these things is a plastic frame.

You're better off buying a new LCD when you can afford one.

As for making a protective cover over thin outer plastic, glass is much superior to plexi.
