View Full Version : Powering a USB Hub ...?

Hey guys.

I've got a USB hub-related question. Is it possible to power a USB Hub on batteries? To do this, I need to plug in a bus-powered USB hub to a self-powering USB hub. (I checked out the USB Hub Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hub) page)

So, about my question. The hub I need to power requires 5V. (That's what the little label above the power adapter port says) The hub didn't come with a power adapter cord.

Anyone know of a way to do this? Thanks in advance. :D

it would be possible but problems may arise from the voltage of the batteries dropping. because even if you had a 5v battery it wouldnt stay at 5v for very long

Hmm. That's true.

I know this is a weird theory, but would it be possible to power it by another USB cord? So, two cords going into the PC, not one.

USB ports put out 5V, so I think you could.

Alrighty. Here's my plan.

I'm planning to link together two USB Hubs. But, one requires it to be powered. (Check my first post! :p)

It's basically to make an 8-port hub. Now that I think of it, couldn't I just plug in both hubs to the PC? Wooooooooow, dumb moment.

Both of these hubs (or the one big one) will be contained in a "Project Box." Yeah, one from Radioshack. Anyways, this will power a Linux Leech (refer to this Instructable (http://www.instructables.com/id/ECCWVVWMI8ERUX107R/), not by me. It's a great tutorial though!) and it serve as a Hub for my Project HRG. Confusing, but I'm not real sure how else to explain it.

If anyone needs anymore info, just say so. :D

Just to be sure, how many amps are supplied by the power cable?

Not sure? The hub didn't come with one. It has the option to be supplied by power by one though.

I have a powered hub, which is fine for things like my external hard drive which draws more current than my laptop's port can supply. The hub works fine without its psu for card readers or thumbdrives.
