AMD pwns the Pentium 4 in gaming performance across the board. The only P4 that I have seen that has had relative sucess in outperforming the AMD64 is the Pentium 4 EE 3.7 overclocked to 4.12 Ghz, which can be found in the Falcon Northwest Mach Five ($7000). :eek;.

AMD all the way is best for me. In every price point.

what about now is Amd still ahead?

I would say that intel is deffinately farther ahead with the core 2, and now, with the core i7
Intel for high-end systems (now that the i7's out, barring any unforeseen problems), for average machines, it doesn't really matter which way you go, certainly not as much as it did in 2005.
If you want cheap, use AMD, if you want quality (such as good overclocking), use Intel.
I'm happy with my X3. It pushes everything I need it to, and has exceeded my expectations in real-world application. Intel has been pushing the limits as well with their new i7's (if you are willing to spend extravagant amounts of money for a new processor).
Coffee is love, coffee is life.
You can get a new Athlon 64 X2 3800+ for $30.
