nooooooooooooooooooooo......
I first came accross gimp while I was running windows.
It's cross platform! w00t!
But I'm only using it 'cos it's free and CS2 won't work on Linux (although it is my default back up for when CS2 isn't installed or is broken - Never any need to be stuck with MSPaint).
I reckon it's gotta be the best cost free image editor ever. Bar none.
Just a quickie. Those two windows aren't really necessary. It is possible to include the layers, brushes, blah blah windows in the Gimp main window, alongside tool properties.
First, close that second window. Next, see that little arrow next to 'paintbrush'?
Click that, and you can add whatever tabs you like to it.
So you can add (as I have) layers, brushes, gradient and histogram. and many more.
It saves cluttering up the screen, as you only have one window besides the actual image(s).
Good tip.
I didn't include it because I thought someone new might not know about histograms and stuff, and the default generally covers you for most eventualities.
I leave mine as standard, and only really use the layers and undo bits.
Thanks for contributing!
I can see this ending up as the definitive guide to Gimp for newbies!
Well, including the histogram is just my personal thing. The point I was making is that all the 'out of the box' functions of that second window can be included in the main one, so you don't need the second. Most importantly IMO is layers.
Click that arrow and you'll see a myriad options to include.
I love the personalisation options, another reason that many people prefer it to Photoshop.
But I just leave it at the default. Tell ya what though, I'm glad you pointed it out. Many a n00b will thank you.
Any other usefuls?
You are a God! Sorry little over powering that. I have been using your tutorials and have been amazed with what I have been able to achieve.Check it out here http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/586/sig22qv5.jpg
I was about to give up on Gimp when I came across your fountain of knowledge, thanks mucka!
Just one question, are there anymore in the pipeline?
Erm...
Well, there wasn't, I thought this thread had died and been replaced with a better one.
And fountain of knowledge? I thank you, but that is something I deffo 'aint.
I thought I knew what I was doing until I saw some of the skills about on TBCS, but I shall have a think and see what else I could add to here.
Thanks Marmite (and by the way, I love Marmite, it's fab!).
