In high school there was a lan party about every 2 months.
Lots of CS mostly. Warcraft 3, Mechwarrior 4, Total Annihilation, and a few other games, but CS was our prize pig.
I used to love lan parties. All of us went to school together and would get together and play CS over a weekend, or spring break, or 5 days in summer.
The biggest party I was in was 28 people in a basement. That took some work and some extension cords because we kept flipping the breakers.
I've also done some work for a local cybercafe that isn't around anymore.
Now I don't do much of it. I prefer large tower builds with lots of equipment inside, which isn't very fun to deal with at LAN parties. I don't play many multiplayer or online games anymore either.
I dont like sponsored LAN parties but I love arranging them. Then again, I really dont know if its called a LAN party with only 4 people and comps. But if its with all people I know then I LOVE LAN parties.

Every Wednesday night, a group of us (5 - 8 depending) get to gether at someones house (last week was my turn to host), and we do multiplayer mayhem. The host gets to pick the game, though we usually end up in Halo2 or Super Mario War (google it.. hehe) by the end of the evening.
I usually grab a projector and screen from work, and we have 4 people on that, and 4 people on the hosts tv screen. 2 Xbox 360's, 2 Wiis, or whatever, and we always have a great time.
Last week when I hosted, we had 2 xbox360's and played 4 player Call of Duty 3, and 4 player Gears of War. After we finished a the beer, I busted out the Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 4, and we pissed off the downstairs neighbors. Good times.
We've done N64 nights, SNES nights, Dreamcast makes an appearance usually, and next time I host, I'll bust out the Sega Master system! Oh yeah, good times.
Tonight I think it's either Gears of War or COD3.
But an actual LAN party? Nope.. never been.

Biggest LAN we ever did was 6 people, played Company of Heroes 3v3, it was AWESOME! Of course CoD2, BF2 and FEAR: Multi. FEAR is a great game for LAN parties. A friend of mine kicked our asses with his judo kicks!!
Had 4 events! It's best if you have a laptop, but since I was the host, didn't differ that much, I have a Qosmio F20 btw.
LAN parties are good with your friends, good fun.

My university runs huge lans every month. I prefer to play a few quiet RTS games with my friends Total Annihilation, C&C Generals, AGE 2, 3 . Lan parties can be annoying as some people can take it so seriously.
But seeing the face of someone across the room you have never met who has just got a couple of m4a1 rounds to the head is most satisfying.

The only lan party I've been to is one we have a couple times every six months when two of my friends come home from college. And it's only 3 people.
