Well I just used vlite to produce a massively cut down version of vista. no idea if I will get a working machine from it yet as I haven't got anything to install it on lol planning to add firefox 2, objectdock, an old MSN messenger client, zonealarm and antivir to the machine.
I'm trying to install this on a pentium III 733Mhz. Currently can't do so as I'm 256M short on Ram. When I get that I expect an error message to pop up saying:
Error code 666: Who are you trying to fool?

vLite allows you to remove the RAM limit.

Ok I think I cut too much out lol ... Vista installs then comes back with a missing hal.dll file error every time. First I thought this was due to an error with the HDD but I did a zero sweep clean on it to mash the MBR (no OS was installling) and that solved that problem - I think there was a rootkit or virus hiding in the MBR.
Now have Ubuntu up and running nicely on it, going to install Vista with no tweaks except the aero and indexing services and 512M RAM limit removed and see how long it takes to boot.

hal.dll is to do with the hardware abstraction layer. If it is missing, windows doesnt have a chance of working. Try copying it from another windows installation, or from the source disk.
