Default Alien Autopsy 2: The Phoenix

This is where I'll post the mod of my new power supply mod, as my old one kinda bit the dust.

The plan: 1 new Li Shin (used, but working) power supply, 2 new Evercool Evergreen 70mm fans, 2 TT silver fan grills, some misc shop supplies and a couple LED's.

    Stay Tuned!

I think I've determined how I'm going to post this build. This thread is going to be done in video format, and I've decided to pay tribute to the best builder and re-builder in TV fame: Mike Holmes.

I'll try to post some simple plans a bit later.

As promised, here are my drawings to date.

    The structrual and HVAC drawings.

Electrical drawings and calcs. As you can see, I'm missing some numbers. I've sent a message to the tech support for the fans to see if I can get some "factory" numbers for the current draw. What I may do is take an educated guess, stick a pot on it and see what works best. Maybe 100% RPM is too noisy or inefficient. We'll see.

In other news, the video is coming along. I've got a few clips filmed and more planned. Stay tuned.

Ed: Oh ya. What isn't shown is where the 8 LED's are going to go. I'm planning on putting them on the bottom of the four corners of the fans. Translucent green fans with green LED's, it should look neat.

Ed: Oh ya 2. I've slightly moved the size and location of the exhaust holes. I've set them to match the end locations of the vertical aluminum heat blocks on each side, and, so the total exhaust hole area is balanced on each side. I have approx 5 cm^2, which, after a few air flow calculations, is going to be a LOT of air moving out the side holes from the two fans (assuming 100% RPM and CFM, as rated). (I converted my slots to square inches and calculated the flow in inches per second.) I'm thinking I may have to do some rounding on the corners of the top aluminum plate to "encourage" air flow around that beast. (Small pause) Meh, should be interesting when it's done - can't wait to fire it up, um, no pun intended.

Oh ya 3. And there's a reason I've done up the electrical sheet as it is. You'll just have to wait and see.

Blarg! I received the new brick in the mail today. After plugging it in and running it for no more than 5 minutes, it got very hot and was making hissing and crackling noises. Needless to say I'm trying to return it. Bah, and I was all excited too. I don't think that power supply would last any longer than a few weeks.

    Heh, I like the graphics.

In filming news, I'm still waiting for the fans and the grilles to show up. Not happy. So, I'm trying to film scenes that I don't need those props for, but there's only so many. Blarg. Oh well, such is the mail order kit bash.
