EDIT: That's what's nice about wireless N. I set my router to N only so unless they have a newer laptop they simply wont see the connection.

What about encryption? Do you think they're getting past it?

Could always setup a RADIUS server which forces the user to log in (something I haven't had time to do... yet), and if they don't have a link you could place a pay-pal button on the page allowing them temporary access for a nominal fee

Are you using WEP? This is very easily crackable and not really worth using.

Also I would refer you to the security tips in the Wireless Networking Wiki:

- Use WPA/WPA2 security

- Use a long and odd passphrase such as 1Hy6%jkOilUtredF8*54D$dFER

- Use an odd SSID such as y&thgfR%$rg)k@jkhG^YF

- DO NOT broadcast the SSID (unless you have a problem connecting something)

- Use MAC address filtering on your router and only allow your own devices.

- Change passphrases frequently.

That lot keeps most people away and bored. Serious hackers will still break it and piggyback but few and far between have the skills to do that - WEP it's childs-play, literally.

WEP can mean the difference between the whole neighborhood on your wireless or maybe one or two people.

WEP is amazingly easy to break, but honestly, even just seeing a password protected network makes me either turn the other way or connect to an open one (or my own, but assuming my router is down).

no encryption is like the car without locks or windows -- plenty of people are going to get in to it.

WEP is like having locks and windows; it'll keep most people out, but doesn't take long to get in to.

WPA is like the car with the really, really good alarm system, hardened locks, and lexan windows; you can get in, but you've got to be determined.


as an IT tech, I encourage people to run WPA or WPA2 on their home wireless systems, but not everybody wants to bother with needing a password or such.

anywho, maybe MAC filtering so that non-familiar devices get flipped internet could be your last line of defense against wifi stealers. unless they're not using it to browse fleabay or anything. haha.
