@ Trace: That's looking great, but I do think the original one looked better. Sometimes it's best to resist the urge to keep adding stuff, because at some point it will become too cluttered. Try to have a main focus point in your graphic, and emphasize that. You can also try having a gradient or very subtle pattern in the background, you'll find it adds a lot to the picture than just a flat colour, especially black. Even a very dark blue-grey can have more impact. And always experiment with your blending modes, they can yield very interesting effects (my particular favourite is overlay).

Having said that, your skills are definitely coming along well, keep up the good work
