How would you go about making something like this? I was curious because I am planning on attempting a build, if I get the cash.

Are you wanting to build a thin-client or just extend controls? Thin-clients are cool, but there's a limit to the stuff you can do with them.

I've been wanting to do one in either the wall or the floor for a while. If size didn't matter too much, you could use some slightly more powerful hardware. I might put a little door or easy access panel in the wall for upgrades, etc. if I did it.
I was thinking of a thin client, but a little larger. Im repairing an 18' travel trailer, and really need a pc thats going to be out of the way in the front of the trailer. I have a decent pc for the back, that I am just going to stick in the closet. I was thinking about networking it to a thin client in the front and using the front pc, just for my coding work.
What OS are you running?
