You can try using a console code to complete the current quest or current quest stage.
People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.

Did you speak to everyone in the church? Its been a while since I did that quest. If you have and went and found the guy dead in the castle then you might have to use the console.

Also go through your quest log and make sure there aren't any unfinished related quests or something. That's happened to be plenty of times, where I think it's a glitch or a mess-up in the game but really I'm just missing something.

This, I think. I seem to remember having to tell the head priest that the gate was closed.

Heheh, good game. I know the feeling...I made the mistake of finally getting Fallout 3 to run (reasonably) stably on my computer this weekend....I didn't get anything done this weekend...guess why.

OK. I found the journal in my menu that tells all the things I've done and it says I already took back the castle. It also says that Savlian Matius was killed in the battle, even though he is clearly still standing out there.

    I think I'm a Ghost Whisperer and he doesn't know he's dead

Another thing. I won all the matches at the arena and became champ. My current quest sill shows me doing weekly matches at the arena against animals. I can't tell how long this will go on for. Can I quit a quest somehow?

The arena matches where you kill animals never end. Its a easy way to make some $$$. Buying houses gets expensive. Have you been given the kavatch curious?

That's odd...he's definitely supposed to be dead...

Try going back to an earlier save (quick and auto saves you can go back one by going to the saves directory and renaming the files; I forget what the extensions are atm, but they're pretty self-evident).
