Default Problem with old games on XP:Solved!

I recently came across a problem with loading an old game that I had played years ago called "Fallout" - remember that one? I had played it on my old W98 machine before and thought I would reminise and play again. When I tried to install I received an error message that there was not enough room on my HD to install the game-on my new Seagate 80GB drive After much hair pulling I realized that it was not detecting my hard drive because I had formatted my drive (all 3 partitions) with NTFS. I quickly took an unused portion of my E: drive (archive) and created a 6GB partition using FAT32 and Volia! it worked. Now when I want to stroll down memory lane and play some old PC games (Wing Commander comes to mind) I just install on F:Old Games partition and everything works fine. If anyone has some more tips on playing old games on new hardware please add to this thread.

    Fallout. Sweeeeeeet.

There's instructions for installing Fallout 1 and 2 under XP at nomutantsallowed.com allong with a sweet amount of fallout gossip and fan work.

Fallout is possibly the greatest game of all time. Good choice. You ever tried playing with an intelligence under 3? Makes for a very different gaming experience-sometimes hillarious, sometimes thought provoking, even infuriating, but almost always fun

Although sometimes, don't you just want to shoot Ian in the back for a change? Find out how much he likes it?

Probably the greatest RPG game ever...I think it won "Game of the Year" back in 96 or 97. Was followed by "Fallout 2" and "Brotherhood of Steel", If you are into RPG (before MMORPG and all this new fanglty stuff) you should play these-they are true classics.

Except Brotherhood of Steel. It ruins the good fallout name. I spit on it's shallow grave.

Yea, too bad games that started out so great had to die in shame. Oh well, that's the way of things...by the way, you asked if I had played with intelligence of 3 or less...I haven't but Redbeard has...he also played with luck at 10....if you haven't tried that you should.

Play fallout 1 with a luck of 10 and if you're good you can beat it under 3-4 hours. I got the sniper rifle after 30 mins I think. The key is the Random encounters are so much more frequent and some give you very good stuff (like 10,000 caps I think is the amount). So yeah try it.

Just set it up again. You guys got lucky, the Nanny State that is the UK managed to get Black Isle to remove the children from the game for us, because it was possible to shoot them.

You probably know about what we call "The Dunblane Massacre", which happened 10 years ago yesterday. So i'm not going to launch into an ethical debate about whether it's allright or not: i don't think that's a correct discussion at this moment in time. But needless to say, i just found the patch that puts them back in for us UK guys, which i've installed. Now the game will have a lot more substance and some of the missions will actually make sense. Don't think this was too bad in fallout, then again, this will be my first run with kids activated. Fallout 2 was FUBAR when they took the kids out; you couldn't save little timmy or whatever his name was, so the Modoc citizens went to war with the slags no matter what you did. I mean, how much did that suck? I'd say preventing a war was a pretty big sidemission.

Have you seen the guy who got the BI design documents and finished programming in the missions? Some things were left out and someone has actually finished where BI left off using their own design sheets. Havn't fully looked at it, but after glancing at the README, it seems like he's done a damn good job-included a proper authorship statement saying who to thank and what doesn't work and everything. Check the files at nomutantsallowed.com.

Another great free utility for playing old games is DosBox. I actually used it to play through a few rounds of Jagged Alliance and Carmageddon a few weeks ago. I love it. It is basically x86 emulation with DOS for the WinXP environment.

While we're on the topic of old-school gaming, check out Abandonia Reloaded, a site that specializes in Freeware and Abandonware old-school games! Very cool classic games are available there, including Maniac Mansion, Elder Scrolls: Arena, King's Quest, Starsiege: Tribes, Dink Smallwood and much, much more. Definately worth a visit.
