But save the color changes to something like a flash module; battery to keep all the settings isn't the best execution.

SD Card..? Average person has at least a few floating around there house these days, especially the older sub 1GB cards.

Nah, just ~4MB Flash. For the bootloader, and the rest for the configuration.

Though, being able to backup those settings onto an SD card wouldn't be a bad idea

no need for the card reader to store config data - my NZXT Sentry 2 saves all it's settings on an EEPROM or something when it's powered off. Keep the settings for at least 10 seconds and they're saved. Next time you power up they're all right there

I'm not sure how patents and whatnot fall for this, but I did finally think of something.

What I would really like to see is basically a 3M EM550GPS with a high-dpi laser sensor and three additional buttons (forward, back, and I've gotten quite attached to the "search" button on my MX1000/Revolution that I re-map to Ctrl-F4). Rocker at the top for left and right, with center-click that engages both, scroll wheel on the front, away from the user, between the middle and index fingers or vertically by the thumb, where 3M puts their third button, back and forward buttons, say, along the cusp of the thumb area, and another button or two under the tips of the other fingers.

They are seriously the most comfortable mice I have ever used. I actually didn't know they still made them (let alone a wireless version) until I started looking for an example picture. The last time I actually used one was several years ago with an old PS/2 ball version, but it remains the most comfortable mouse I have ever used. Now that I know they still make them, I think I'm going to have to buy myself a new present. The only problem is they have relatively limited functionality and as far as I can tell they still use optical sensors, which are...less than nice to use when it comes to anything outside of office work and the like.
That we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously.
